Huh just found this thread. 90-2016, Crew Chief/CDDAR on 141s, 130s, 16s, 15s, A10s, and lastly 17s....had the best career and enjoyed the hell out of it! Best assignment was Germany hands down. Bitburg, then Spang, then Rhein Main, and then Ramstein. Best aircraft I worked, has to be the C-17. Too easy and was soooo nice to be an FCC on....

All the 17 hydro guys we got when I was on 135's couldn't troubleshoot for shit. Then I pcs'd to a 17 base and understood why. Just had to give it the old turn it off and turn it back on . Hands down one of the easiest airframes in my opinion, at least as a pnuedraulic guy.

We used to say Control/Alt/Delete (remove external power and reconnect) and it fixes most 17 issues!! Now you wanna talk Hydraulic nitemares...let me introduce you to the A10...ugh

We'd call it going black jet. I'll always appreciate a crew chief that's from the fighter world. Actually turning wrenches. Not just a tire and lube guy. I've always heard fighters as hydraulics is a cake walk seeing as it's strictly backshop for us (because crew chiefs are actually worth a shit).

AC130U and C17A guy here…I cut my teeth on the 130 and still my favorite jet, I feel that’s where I learned to mechanic. The C-17 was a dream to work due to the reasons stated here, it just seemed filthy compared to any other jet I’ve worked. I wrench in the civilian world now as an A&P and compare the airbus to the 17s…everything is CB resets and cycle power.

Nope, Hurlburt Field and McChord. I grew up watching the 141 fly over my house. They phased out just as I was getting ready to join.

@TacoGeeloor Did you know Al Flores at Herbie? He retired as a Chief just a few years ago. Im sure we have run in the same circle of peoples, especially the McChord peoples! I retired out of McGuire in 2016, we had a lot of Cadre from McChord when the 17s first arrived there. Scott Krysyick was my supervisor, former QTP instructor there, taught me so very much!!

Al Flores sounds familiar for sure, I can’t be certain though.

I was at Dyess from Sep 1993 to Apr 1999.

Worked at LRS: Receiving, Flight Service Center and Stock Control.

That Stock Control experience got me a Regional Supply Squadron (RSS) job at Hickam, HI. (1999-2003)

From there, Special Duty Assignment to Ramstein, GE.

    Care to explain that?

Eight years USAF Reserve, 1987-1995, was almost a full-time job for most of it. AFSC was 9766 (primary), 9736 (secondary). Flight Nurse on C-141B's and O.R Nurse when I wasn't flying. OR Nurse was also my civilian gig. I'd say being aircrew made it a real Air Force job. Just Cause, Desert Shield and Desert Storm participant . Also medical aircrew qualified in C-130 and C-9. My only regrets were not joining sooner and not staying longer. Got tired of deployments after the first child came along.

Thanks for all of your services, folks!

I grew up as a Strat Brat, mostly at Warren. Dad retired there in '72 (yes, I'm old, too!)
