I considered it. I'd have to buy a bit to modify anyway, so I'd rather just buy what I need if I can, but...

I have access to a lathe at work (I'm not certified to use it myself, but I could probably find someone). How easy/difficult is it to work the steel used in a typical hex bit?

I too vote getting a hole drilled.

Especially on a lathe that'd be fast and easy as hell.

Tools typically used hardened steel but carbide tooling should work on it.

It would be pretty easy on a lathe, I'm sure somebody there has a center hole drill, then just control your feed with the tailstock. A good high speed steel drill will still drill tool steel. Wow that's a tongue twister

    Not sure that's viable.

    Some context...

The bolt is part of a cam assembly to hold a bike rack into a hitch receiver. I doubt it's a standard bolt, although I can't say I've even considered taking the cam assembly apart.

The security hex is supposed to discourage people from stealing the rack. That's also why 1up doesn't publish the fastener spec and why they want proof-of-owernship of a rack before selling the tool

Of course, it's not that hard to figure out what size tool you need and buy/fabricate one, so I have an additional lock to secure things.

I have two of the original 1up L-wrenches, I'm just looking for something more convenient.

Another option I'm considering: Take a 3/8" security L-Wrench, cut the working end off, and epoxy/JBweld/whatever it into a regular 3/8" socket.

Could drill into the socket wall and tap it to add a set screw in there to hold it in place

Not sure why I didn't do this earlier, but I just checked... even McMaster and Grainger don't have 'em.
