Why no manual transmission with 6' beds?

Yes indeed. I was under the impression the automatic automatically downshifts as needed. This gen2 4cyl does not smoothly do it, you have to basically mash the throttle and jerk to force it. Lol

I am a lifelong MT driver nearing 40 years rowing the gears in control of moving the truck forward.
Perhaps I don't know how that automatic works or possibly some issue with the transmission on thatgen2 I haveyet to figure out why.

My gen1 does have the 5VZFE v6 MT and I definitely do Not have to downshift from 5th to 4th to maintain highway speed out of that same valley up the hilly lol

155,000 miles on my 2011 6 spd same clutch as new. Camper is 18 feet. Wife's Kia is a 6 speed manual. Bought her a manual decades ago she has never look back.

 

One reason I got a 4Runner for a daily - same short wheelbase as a single cab 2nd gen Taco but with 270 hp V6, good for zipping through traffic

 

Definitely something special about the woman that knows how to handle the stick

 

I think you’d find that the combination of modern autos with more than 4 gears and higher torque/power engines will eclipse what is a very outdated old design in your ‘11.

But sometimes all you need is a single cab pickup with no frills

 

and that probably means too little power to maintain speed on hills, manual or not.

 

For the current 4th gen. Not really sure to the why.

Its not like toyota had a whole new transmission built for the 4th gen, the rc60f has been around a while found on hilux. The 3rd gen with the rc62f was specifically for that truck and was offered in both dcsb and access cabs.

Theres no real answer anyone here could give you, youd have to talk to toyota about it.

 

Why no manuals combined with 6’ beds? Easy answer.

Because the Toyota product planners hadn’t been informed early enough in the production cycle that after 33 years of ownership someone was ready to trade his ‘92 on a comparable model, added to the the twelve other people in North America who would’ve bought one.

 

after manually shifting the automatic from D to 3 it climbs out of that valley rather well back up to 75~80mph, i think the RPM gauge nears 4k though LoL

IMO, Toyotas in general, and Tacomas in particular are perilously close to "overpriced" already.

Another 25% (or even 5-10%), and I am out. I can do without what for me was an optional purchase to begin with.

My guess is the reason for this is not because people don’t want a manual , the manufacturers sell what they want to sell. I originally wanted a manual also , bit it’s so miserable finding one the way you want it , color, options etc .You end up giving in a and getting an auto. I’ve always driven manuals also , but as someone said they are not the same any more. The clutch’s now don’t feel natural , with all the gadgets they add in for people that don’t know how to drive them . So I agree they are an afterthought now and it’s probably a better decision to go auto in 2025 , as much as I hate to say that, and I fully believe the manufacturers don’t want to make them any more .

 

Your truck is built better than the 4th gen for sure ...keep it ...enjoy it ...

 

Because you and maybe 10 others would actually want that. They make trucks in combos that will sell. Pretty much Sales and Marketing class 101.

 

I've thought for a while now that Toyota only offers the stick as a marketing line. Its CAFE numbers are worse than the automatic, so has no reason to fully capitulate to demand. Those thoughts lead me to conclude that Toyota only produces enough manuals to justify the cost of offering them in the first place and not a single unit more. They keep development and validation costs low on the stick by only offering it in limited trims. Limited trims and configurations means less testing and lower production costs.

Anyone who's bought a stick Tacoma recently will tell you how tough they are to find and secure. So the demand is definitely greater than the supply. And I can't reasonably think of another reason why.

 

There are a lot of guys who would like a 6 foot bed and a stick. A lot of good examples of that in the 3rd gen where they only offered that combo on the Sport in the US, and people begrudgingly bought them anyways despite wanting an OR. Toyota just isn’t willing to do what people really want.
