Long day of motorcycle stuff today:

It has been raining for the past few days and I couldn't find anyone to ride with, so today I decided I wanted to try my new Dunlop Trailmax Missions on wet roads, so I told my wife I was going out for a ride. She asked "can I come?" and of course I couldn't say no. She was an absolute champ for sitting through all the rain. We were 1 of ~3 motorcycles I saw all day, and probably the only people riding two up.

While riding to our favorite coffee spot in Pescadero, we came up on a Toyota Highlander that promptly pulled over to let us by. It turns out they were going to the same coffee shop, and the driver said he and his wife were super nervous for us just due to the conditions. The bike felt great though, between the weight and the tires it was pretty happy despite the conditions.

Even cooler is that Highlander driver is a professional photographer and offered to take some pictures of us! It was a really cool experience.

Then I came home and did an oil change and installed the two Stahlbus quick drain valves I bought for the bike:

Completely unnecessary but I really like the one I put on the Forester so I figured why not.

Then I decided to drain the oil on the RC 390 to start installing the shift kit I bought for it.

    I got the clutch out:

All this to replace a small lever and spring:

Unfortunately I bought a tool off Amazon to remove the clutch hub and overtightened it on the clutch hub and broke the aluminum:

So, I'm at a stopping point now. I should have just used an impact on the hub nut to remove it instead of using the clutch hub tool I bought. If I didn't tighten the tool enough, it would disengage and gouge the splines on the hub. Tightening it too much obviously wasn't the answer either.

I'm not sure how to install the new one now without the same thing happening. I'm going to try putting the bike into 1st gear and then stepping on the rear brake while tightening the nut. I might just reinstall the old hub that way for practice before trying with the new one I just ordered.

Evening everyone! Been a while. No real moto stuff for me lately…. But I noticed the Chinese knock off groms got an update for 2025. I might pick one up locally if I can test ride it first. Riding the monkey more these days for quick putts around town really made me wish I had a buddy that also had a stupid little bike. Now that I’ll have two, there’s no excuses. My partner has expressed interest in learning to ride so this can be the “don’t care if it falls” bike too.

Yes. You can have them shipped straight to you and you can straighten all the out with your DMV (or just ride dirty), or you can go through a dealer and pay them to handle the paperwork (Tax, tile, license, etc...). I have a dealer 30 min away so I was going to call and get an OTD price. I almost bought one of the prior year models before buying the monkey.

Ah. Was just curious. KS is a stickler for on-road titles from the manufacturer. Could do the SD work around but ive had friends pulled over for that too.

Man it's amazing how close that is to a grom. I'm assuming it's still carbureted?

I'm sure it is at that price point. I'm curious how close the copy is. Like how many parts are interchangeable between the two- body panels, etc. According to the specs, it's a 4 speed so the motor/trans housing might be different enough where aftermarket things like intake and exhaust might not bolt right up without some mucking around. I don't mind making a few brackets and whatnot, but not trying to build something from scratch. I'll find out if/when I can see one in person and report back.

My buddy bought the RC390 and it came with a quick shifter (not installed) and selectable fuel mapping, hopefully it doesnt come to replacing the clutch but I'll urge caution.

The quick shifter is unlikely to be ever installed as he is a new rider, but he may keep it like you did and convert it entirely.

I really want to ride it, sorry to see about yours but you have backups at least!

It’s an awesome bike if you get the chance to ride it! I’ve heard mixed reviews about the OEM quick shifter so I haven’t put one in my bike.

I have been having issues with false neutrals on track which is why I am going through this process. Hopefully I can get the hub I ordered from eBay soon and can put the bike back together.

Are race boots rigid like dirt bike boots? I imagine they have different requirements. I'm still very green but find it all fascinating.

Also do you ever go back to 1st gear? I imagine you gear it so its all short.
