My truck was abused pretty badly and I've fixed and restored it quite a bit. It shifts really hard into 3rd after warming up. And occasionally shifts hard in other gears. No trans codes. Already did a drop and replace of fluid and no change at all.

I'm looking for a new trans. I know one issue is the torque converter shutter and there are ways to fix that within the valve body.

Is there an aftermarket trans that people have used with the fixes already present? Or are you all using OEM transmissions?

Looking for any and all feedback.

Find the problem before replacing parts. It sounds electrical to me. I've had mice chew insulation off wires causing them to short and create weird shifting. A little shrink wrap over the exposed wires fixed the problem.

In my case I was getting CEL codes that indicated the transmission was shot. I took the car to the shop to have the transmission rebuilt. They called me 30 minutes later and told me to come back and get my car, it was fixed. They spotted the exposed wire and fixed it before pulling the transmission. It was an honest shop. Instead of a $2000 rebuild they charged me 1/2 hour labor ($50) to fix the problem.

And if your transmission really is toast, I'd still let a reputable shop rebuild it rather than replace it.

Very sure its the trans itself, been there done that before on other vehicles. There are no codes of any kind, anywhere to be found. If i drove like a grandma it shifts mostly ok, but harder throttle it hits super hard. and will do it in 4th as well but very rarely while Upshifting. Downshifting to 3rd also sometimes a little rough. I haven't 100% ruled it out, but 99% chance its on its way out.

I haven't found someone local to rebuild it yet.

Toyota will sell you a new/factory reman for about 5000 bucks. There are very few places anymore doing quality rebuilds on a customer core - I happen to have one relatively local but they quoted me for almost as much as one from the dealer, and it would have meant not having the truck running for 6 weeks.

Buying a reman seems to be a crapshoot - formerly good names are not so good anymore, and a ton of places are doing really bad rebuilds, folding when the reputation gets too bad, and reopening under a new name with the exact same address.

Most people seem to be going for low mileage used trans in 2nd gens. Car-part.com has good filters for mileage and distance.

    Thought I'd update this...

Today I disconnected the battery for a couple hours and swapped out the exhaust manifold gaskets. I also cleaned the maf which was the worst looking maf I've ever seen. Cleaned the throttle body also.

Drove several miles and the hard shifting for 3rd was totally gone. Smooth as butter. Shut truck off after a stop and it immediately came back.

    Stumped..

Heard gearmuncher was the resident expert here.

The truck did have a hidden throttle position sensor at one point. I've never seen it with hptuners or my scanner. But a guy with a tech 2 saw it while scanning. This also confused me...

Did that include a new torque converter? Proper procedure would say, at the bare minimum, to get it cut and cleaned.

Yes Toyota reman transmission comes with torque converter. Autozone carries aisin reman for around the same price.

Autozone is out of stock. I'll probably just order from Toyota. I'm pretty sure it's the transmission without any sort of trouble codes relating to it any longer.
