on my limited for the last few weeks it depends on the outside temp. When it was above 32 out, the battery warmed right up and it used the electric power more so I was getting about 22-23 around town. With the below zero temps it takes too long to warm up and rarely uses the electric power, so 19.5 around town. This is both in the truck computer and in the fuelly app, they are within a .1 of each other every time. On the highway last time I went to Colorado (about 500 miles each way) I was 25.2 there and 24.7 on the return with a lot of snow.

19.7 combined for me. Chin spoiler delete and bypassed auto start/stop on ice. 93 octane.

Benn doing some testing and I am finding better mileage on 87 octane. Both 91 non-ethanol and 93 10% ethanol have been returning about 1 MPG less than the 87 10% did. Tough this time of year because of winter additives.

TRD sport 4x4 iforce max....I'm getting 16.5 mpg. I'm never peeling out and I don't think I have a heavy foot but yet I'm still getting the same gas mileage as my 3rd gen trd off-road.

Getting 20-24 around town and I feel like I won the lottery compared to prior Tacomas (3), FJ, and 4R…Power on demand + mpg, it’s sweet heaven.

It also changes the throttle curve. Sport mode opens the throttle more, earlier into the range of pedal motion.

I think it's just a result of how much power it takes to push a heavy box down the road, with a fairly inefficient drivetrain (direct symptom of the BOF construction we all rave about). Regardless of engine size, you determine how much power you need with the throttle, and the engine burns a relatively consistent amount of fuel to give you that.

The main way to improve it is to come up with something like the first years of the second gen Ridgeline: minivan aero plus FWD transaxle drive gets good mileage. It just doesn't look cool, and the drivetrain is not as durable.

That didn't seem to help the Ridgeline's efficiency much, though. The best year I can find is 21 MPG combined for AWD.

The Maverick follows this formula and does pretty well, but it isn't really a fair comparison with midsize trucks because it's quite a bit smaller.

Can you please explain how you bypassed the auto start/stop? Thanks!

Only way to do it that I've found is either turning on tow/haul or shifting over to "manual" and putting the shift limiter up to S8. Truck will drive as normal since you aren't limiting any gears and the ICE will never shut off. Been driving that way for almost 4k miles on mine so far.

Just curious, what is the reason to do this?

I'm my mind, it'll be less wear and tear on the engine over the life of the vehicle. To my knowledge the oil pump is mechanical while the water pump is electrical. Meaning the coolant will cycle if the engine shuts off, but oil won't. And oil is what cools the turbo. Now I'm sure Toyota knows their stuff more than a shmo on the Internet like me, but it just makes me feel a little better about longevity. I got 310k out of my 2005, so I'm going to try to do the same with this one.

Toyota has been doing this with their hybrids for nearly 30 years and you do not hear much about engine failures. Shifting through multiple gears in the trans at every stop and loading the trans in 8th with the torque converter possible not locked sounds like it could be adding more wear overall.

I have owned 5 Toyota hybrid vehicles since 2007. My first met it's demise when my daughter put it into a pole and is was just getting broken in at 165,000 miles. I have 3 in the house hold now and never a issue with drivetrain.

Could you elaborate on this? I'm not following what your describing? All I'm doing is setting the shift limiter to S8 thereby not limiting the gear selection available to the truck. I don't actually shift at all, I let the transmission shift as it wants and just drive normal.

The turbocharger is water cooled and oil cooled, for what it’s worth. we haven’t used pure oil-cooled turbos for decades in production cars

You are manually shifting to S8 once and leaving it there until you park it?

I have not played with the trans much on this truck (too new), but other Toyota's I have owned it changes the shift points based on the input request from the shifter which is all done electronically. This could have you lugging at low speed and possibly the TC not being fully locked.

If you cannot deal with the engine cutting off, try using the Tow/Haul. This should also bypass the engine stop.

Yes, I leave it in S8. It shifts identical as far as I can tell up and down from 1 to 8, the ICE just doesn't shut off. I wonder if I can see whether the TC is locked with my scan gauge 2? When should it be locked versus not?

That is a good question. I would do a comparison since you have the capability. That would be great info to have.
