That mini axle probably came pre-bent.

I haven't encountered one that wasn't yet. I have two bent mini housings (front and rear) in my yard right now from buddy's pickup

I was wondering about the rear axle: Is a dually setup really warranted? How heavy does a camper build like that actually end up?

It looks cool anyway, definitely good for the 'grams.

It probably isn't in all reality, he could use his same outer wheel on a single rear wheel 14 bolt axle and be totally fine they're much stronger than that little "1-ton" toyota dually.

Never understood the point of a dually axle on a tiny truck like those
Not to say I wouldn't love to have one like this, for no good reason

The original 2wd camper came with that axle but yeah if you're modifying then there is no point in retaining it. Toyota made some 1-ton cab chassis things from the late 70s to early 90s that all included that axle as a way to get to the advertised 1-ton capacity.

    That's a long boi.

This Chinook pop-top has been listed forever. I like the look of it. Putting it in front of that boat seems ambitious.

That camper would fit nicely behind your reg cab

The Chinook is my personal favorite camper body for these old beaters. I did want to put one on my truck back actually, the pop up is appealing and the shape is nice... But and it's a big but, they're actually way over built and designed much like a boat, way too much wooden ribbing, fiberglass, and gel coat. I'd never be able to get it light enough, unlike the sunraiders with their more "scamp like" construction.

Mine's too nice to cut up, and I like that it still fits in my garage

Someday, it would be fun to have a spare truck and enough work space to do silly things.

What construction method are you planning to use for yours? Steel frame with aluminum skin? Aluminum frame would be sweet if you have the money and welding abilities.

Flat bed will be steel framed but aluminum decked, the camper frame will be all aluminum with FRP skin.

Are you putting together a full SW model for it? Or kind of just the frame and then figuring it out irl from there?
Figuring out seams and such in SW has always been an issue for me in my many incomplete camper shell models

Nice. I need to learn to weld, and then learn to weld aluminum. I want something between a DCU and a tentless GFC--I like the fully-opening sides of a GFC but I prefer the looks of a generic contractor shell. Making one myself would be way more fun than shelling out $4k for a custom DCU.

I'm going to scrap my initial model and redraw when we finish the bed frame I think since some plans changed while we were actually staring at everything. Like the fuel tank, the shock mounts, an x brace... etc

I am thankful that my friend is a good TIG welder, I can MIG all day and stick steel together pretty okay with the TIG but I have zero torch time with aluminum so he's going to do most of that welding thankfully.

Out of curiosity, because I don't know how thick you'll be going on the aluminum, but will it also be TIG or using a spoolgun?

It'll be TIG, try not to have to ever use a spool gun
