Yeah, that title sounds dumb. Just look under the hood, right? Well I'm looking at an internet ad for a Prerunner that incredibly does not note the engine option. The mpg listed is 20/26 which would indicate a 4 cyl stick, but that could be a typo. I spoke with someone earlier at the dealer (before I noticed this possible error) who said it was a 4 cyl 4x4. I'm a noob for Tacomas, but thanks to all I learned on this site, I was able to figure out that it seems to be a 2wd prerunner (no 4wd switch). The price seems a bit high, so I'm busy sleuthing here, and 11pm on a Saturday night is obviously not the time to call the dealer again.

So I ask the gurus of tacomaworld.com: Are there any other distinguishing markings on a truck to tell what engine is under the hood - without seeing a picture of the engine? Thanks! If I can figure this one out, I may be a fellow Taco owner soon... :D

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
the tailgate "should" have a V6 emblem if it's a V6. bottom right hand corner by the SR5 badge.

got a link to the pics?

If it's an SR5 optioned truck (color matched fender flares vs black plastic flares, sliding rear window, tinted access cab/rear window) then the 4 cyl does not come with fog lights in the front bumper from the factory... of course if its pre-owned, the last owner could have installed the fogs into the bumper on the 4cyl as well. Also, the V6 has a 6 speed manual, vs the 5speed in the 4cyl.

V6 emblem on the tailgate. Prerunner emblem on tailgate if it's a prerunner, if not should be 4x4 and say so on the rear mudflaps. If you can make out the shift pattern in the interior pictures, and it's a stick shift, the 4cyl comes with 5 speed, v6 will be a 6 speed transmission.

Also, the TRD package includes V6 engine. If it's got a factory TRD sticker on it, it's a V6

My 4cyl Prerunner debadged may look like a 6cyl without that V-6 badge on the tailgate. Thats the only way to tell without looking under the hood. Also, the 6 cyl has Fog lights stock with most models, the 4cyl does not, but mine does so? Bottom line, go look at the truck. :D

Hey thanks for the suggestions. There weren't any clear shots of the tailgate, so I couldn't read the lettering. There aren't any fogs in the bumper openings though, and no TRD stickers. It's a 4! Actually that is what I'm looking for. Gas prices are brutal up here in Chicago. I've got to squeeze every mile I can out of my next truck. Unfortunately, I can't just wander over to the dealer, since it is in GA. I have to make sure this is the truck I want before I head down there. Unfortunately, Access cab 2wd prerunner 4cyl manual trans does not seem to be a combo I can get in a new 2011. Too bad, because I've seen some damn good deals on the '11s. Anyway, thanks again everyone!

If it's at a dealer, why not just call and ask for the specs on the truck?
