The first two are on the Grand Canyon route that you have the KML for.

Apparently I need to start watching this guy's videos more. I've actually talked to him about stuff in Canada (he and Canada Mike are good buddies), but didn't realize he was down in the states sometimes.

I dont follow him as much as Trail Recon ( Jeep w/ trailer) and he based out of California from what i can tell. Both do a lot together and do a great job of capturing the adventures without giving away their spots unless you can do some work.

Ditto on favorite spot, which is part of why I went back. Was 4°F that night, but worth every second of watching sunrise there in the morning. The campground (of which I was the only resident, for obvious reasons) was pretty nice too and sites are first come first serve (with permit). TW will screw up the compression on this, but site #7 is the best site...

Did find the petroglyphs, they were about .75 mile down the trail, so probably further than we wanted to go.

Yeah I think we were short on time and decided not to do it was it. We ate lunch there.

I really like my Wildernest. The two cons are weight and wind. I think I've proved that they can hold up to abuse. I'm going on 10 years with mine. You guys don't beat on your shit as hard as I do. I sleep plenty comfortable with another person and a dog in it. I can't imagine a GFC bed is much wider. You could also easily set up a mattress in the bed of the truck. It's rated to hold 1000lbs when it's open without poles supporting it. I don't have a false floor to mess around with. I can do jumping Jack's in the damn thing. Setup 2 camp chairs and sit people on the bed and play cards when it's raining.

I am amazed everyone seems to want wedges over a 180 flip. A GFC design nest would be about perfect. I wish I had the time to build one.

Do any of us really care about the 4th Gen? Everyone in here is sobbing because the world is ending and they are broke. How bout living within your means and not spending an obscene amount of money on a vehicle. I think a big reason many of us are driving Toyotas is because they will run forever if maintained. The new era seem to be less reliable than a truck you can buy for 8k with 300k on it.

Let's quit the political sobbing before the COC gets slammed down in here.

My biggest issue with my current 180 flip tent (just a normal RTT, though I get that the 'nest, flippack, etc. offer a lot more room since you get the truck bed + flip side) is wind and rain, which I get a lot of given that I'm (a) out year round and (b) like to park on the edge of cliffs, rather than in sheltered areas.

Thing I like about the 'nest is the closed form factor.

COC? (I'm probably just too old for the cool kids jargon ;) )

Ehh, I think it's fine for them to share their life pains. Pretty sure none are living beyond their means (at least from what I've seen). Ben's been the closest to that IMO (sorry Ben), but my impression is that he's better these days than he was a couple years ago due to some hard but ultimately positive life changes. They are just finding it hard to feel like they see a path to a wealthier life (which isn't the only gauge of happiness, but is certainly what social media / advertising / news these days implies). They're trying to be a smidge careful of getting too political, hopefully Mods understand that. Frankly, I think/hope they only really care when folks get disrespectful or into "keyboard combat" with each other, hahaha.

Great thing about TW is being able to share with friends we can't/don't talk to in person.

I don't think anyone's talking about actually getting a 4th gen. At least, I hope not. Those things are fugly. Was looking at one in profile the other day, and I think the hood is finally longer than the bed. That means it's like driving in reverse all day. WTF? lol

I am in the lucky (not that I didn't work hard, but there's a lot of luck too) boat, so while I have feelings about what is happening, they are surely different than you guys. Still, I think the biggest issue we have in society today is not being able to talk to each other without taking offense/getting angry/going to our corners for one reason or another. Having empathy - or at least listening and trying to understand - is important.

It's still my opinion that most of us Americans agree or don't really care about 99% of things, but we've been tuned to focus - and even dig in - on the 1% where we don't agree. Well, the algorithms have been tuned to focus us in on those things, anyway. And for now at least, many American lives are dominated by the algorithms.

Even Ryan's comment probably wasn't meant too negatively. Having never met in person, my perception of him is that he's a cool dude I'd like to meet and camp with. Maybe just camp though Ryan, I think I'd probably destroy my truck if I actually tried to keep up you when wheeling. ;)

Yeah you aren't wrong, I was threading the needle for a long time. Learned my lesson and now live debt free. I think my point I was trying to make is the empathy you mention. I think I'll be ok no matter what, I took consider myself to be lucky in many ways, but it hurts me to know and see other people struggling, even if sometimes it's self inflicted. I've been exposed to more poverty here in NM than I ever saw in the PNW and certainly that has influenced my feelings on things.

As far as the 4th gen comment, it is more of a data point for perspective I guess. I kinda like them, but after driving one, I don't want one. They look and drive nice though. But I'll stick to my 2001 junk for now.

    Stuff. Also things.
I just lurk here, but I wanted to drop in and say that I think you’re spot on here, Dan, and I appreciate the perspective.

It’s as if we’re watching the de-evolution of the human species in realtime. It’s sad and disgusting, but there is still hope because there are still good people out there who care about the world they live in and the relationships they have with others.

Speaking of which, years ago, I had the immense privilege of spending a few days wheeling with Ryan and a really great group of other TW folks. I was the noob who showed up overloaded and underskilled, but that group took me in anyway and helped make that a literal trip of a lifetime. In my experience, Ryan is as you described: cool as hell, as laid back as they come, and nothing but helpful. And yes, the dude sends it with abandon and yes, it’s is something to behold every time :D

Dumb question, but I know there were changes to the SPC call joints or something, like the joints or something? I remember @turbodb discussing it at one point but basically the shop said I have a bit of play in my uppers, so I'm due for new ones. I have the older tubular UCA, and I'm a bit hesitant on which joints to buy. Anyone have any guidance?

Also they say there's a lot of play in the rack itself but I told them not to worry about that. Just trying to get it aligned so I can get new tires on the damn thing.

Did they specify what in the rack has play? Is it the rack moving in the mounts? Or is instability internal to the rack. It could be either and a different fix for each. Rack moving in the mounts might still allow getting a good alignment. However, if the movement is internal that may make it impossible to get an alignment as it will directly effect the Toe.

I have the older ones like you. I put in new joints without issue. They are grease able like the old ones I think is all. But all that's available.

If I can I'm swapping to something with a uniball in the future. I don't need the extra castor shit anyways and gain nothing for chamber adjustment.

Agree with Mike. Either bushings(get total chaos ones they are the only ones that don't die and are truly stiff) or the rack guide could be loose or need replaced.

They said it was internal to the rack, but idk, I don't feel it. I'll keep an eye on it though. The caster number is only 2* but it feels a lot better. Pretty heavy coming off center and it is no longer trying to twitch and dart like it was lol
    PXL_20250205_003047689.jpg
I put new bushings in with the used rack. Should be fine.

I'll get th joints ordered then, thanks for the tips. I'll try to just put tires on it and do the ball joints later this year

When I installed mine I max the camber setting that way I don't need a new alignment if I replace them. Obvious have to set the caster part the same.

You can try just tightening the guide to see if it helps.

2⁰ is fine. Hell I liked 0 even.

Didn't you buy that rack used? And the abuse it with 35s? Yeah, not all that surprised it has issues.

    Alignment looks decent.

I mean I don't think they get replaced enough for that to matter. In fact I know that the UCAs have been on there with the same UBJ since the quick trip we did to run ToTW where you ran into Gavin(I think that's his name?). The UCA were sitting on a shelf in the garage when we went in that trip. So almost 8 years? Not bad really.
I did. It was such a a pain that when I saw it leaking from the exact same spot 6mo later I said fucking and I'll run it with a leaky rack indefinitely. I guess one perk of not parking in a garage is not worrying about leaving drips :anonymous:

Alignment felt good, but I only drive it a couple miles and put it in storage. I'll pull it out next week and see for sure. I swear I will ride a bad alignment for a while and acclimate to it so much that once I get a good alignment the truck feels 10x better. The placebo effect even makes it feel like it rides smoother

That's waaaay too much money for that. I know it's low miles, but you can find an ugly one that will get the job done for 5-10k
