285s will require beating the pinch weld way back and trimming some of the fender flares. 255/85R16 only require beating the pinch weld back.

Lots and lots of threads on fitting 33’s, not to be a dick but your best bet is to search around the forum and get different input as different setups will change what’s needed. It will depend on wheel width, backspacing, if you have spacers or not, etc.

In general, you’ll need to trim the fender liner and pinch weld, may have to cut the fender itself some near the back corner of the front wheel wells.

Just to be clear, the suspension lift won’t change how the tires fit, since the geometry stays the same. The lift just changes where static ride height is at in that range. Your best bet is to pull the coilovers out and install the wheels and tires, then jack the lower control arms up until the bump stops are compressed. Turn the steering lock to lock, and cut out anything that interferes with the tire.

Can’t expect one setup to work for all as wheel back spacing varies from owner to owner

Guess I got lucky with OME 2881s/OME Nitrochargers/SPC UCAs/3rd gen 4runner wheels with 255/85/16s. Didn't have to mutilate the pinch weld at all. I do scrub the frame at full wheel lock but I just back off and don't lock it when turning.

With that amount of lift, I'm going to wager he'll definitely need aftermarket UCAs if he wants to get his alignment correct.

Yeah high offset wheels and no spacers keep the tire tucked in real nice. But you get frame rub instead of pinch weld rub. Agreed on needing UCAs, and the full 3” lift will wreck those CV boots mighty quick.
