Upgrade (2018). Netflix. Despite some little plot holes and a drab start, this dark SciFi finishes strong, and with an innovative storyline and fight sequences.

Shimmer Lake (2017). Netflix. The tried reverse chronology method. This one is a funny dark comedy and with a didn’t-see-that-coming ending.

Don’t waste your time and glad it was free. IMHO stunk the joint up.

I had to rewatch the first one to remember how good it was because the 2nd did not live up at all, though I'm not that surprised.

In any case, Braveheart is better than both (imo)

    Beautiful Boy - Amazon Prime

Based on the book of the same name by David Sheff, an account of his relationship and experiences with his oldest son who becomes a meth addict in his late teens/early 20s; chronicles their relationship and his attempts to try and save him while simultaneously reconciling with the fact that he might be helpless in watching his son slowly kill himself. It's a tough watch but really good.

So different hard for me to compare. The early battle scene in the first Gladiator is epic in its own way as is the end of Braveheart. Both great. Gladiator 2 was just stupid pop crep. Fake in every way.

I just always kind of felt like the story of Braveheart and Gladiator were very similar - obviously extremely different in terms of points in history and the context there, but just the whole 'unexpected hero born out of personal tragedy to lead his people against a corrupt regime" sort of thing. Both just wanted a peaceful solitary life but had their family murdered to incite them, both had similar romance plots with the enemy's lovers, both fought for freedom for their people, both met similar martyrdom ends, etc.

I read somewhere that Mel Gibson was offered the lead role for Gladiator back when it was being produced, but turned it down because he felt it was too similar to his Braveheart role from a few years prior. No idea if that's actually true or not but I'm glad Russel Crowe got it, he was a perfect fit.

But yeah, Gladiator 2 was way overdone with the CGI. Part of what makes the first one so great was the lack of it. And then the story just felt completely forced/contrived. I had somewhat high hopes because Ridley Scott did it along with the first one, but that wasn't enough I guess

Sharks in the water in the colosseum??? I know historically they really did do naval themed battles during some the gladiator games, filling it up with water. Pretty incredible to think about actually. But I have a hard time believing they were able to get fking sharks in there lol.

It's like they even tried to save money on the animation it looked so fake. The acting forced, lines crappy, plot sparse. They did have some blood spurting but that's grown old over the years.

I wanted to enjoy the fort attack scene, I tried. Meh, but more power to everyone having varied tastes!

"MO" on Netflicks. Takes a bit to get rolling but funny, again timely.

Cassandra, Netflix. German mini series about rogue AI. Dubbed of course but it's not that bad.
Definitely a weird twist with this one.

Destination Moon (1950). Xumo. From the trailer, “Never before has any woman … sent her man on such an exploit!”

The Damned (1962). Fawesome. Interesting Brit Sci Fi flick. Shirley Anne Field shines.

The Lineup (1958). Prime. A good action crime drama. I drooled over he 1957 black Dodge Coronets the detectives drive.

Ronin (1998). Prime. Another good crime action flick. Jean Reno shines.
