I would put a cap on it, clear the codes and let the evap monitor do its thing.

I get the small evap code intermittently (06 Sienna), seems no ryme or reason. Been down the gas cap rabbit hole too. Toyota sells an "updated" cap FWIW. I just clear the code and move on. I may go a week or a year. Just came back on recently on a very stong head wind day. Was it related somehow? Who nows.

I do know my Toyotas get the common po420 code (cat performance). It was cured by adding o2 extenders. Turns out the epa standards are way too stringent under certain conditions (proven by many Toyota owners). This fix works when new $1k cats don't

Well, crap. I have never propped up thge bed on a double cab... I have no idea if the fuel sending unit is under the rear cab or ?. I have propped up or slide back the bed on lots of other trucks to get to the sending unit and evap hoses. Yes it is a pain with one person and less of a pain with 2. I think that that is your next step. This is assuming that you have check the electric vacuum valves for leakage intermittantly.

Haven't dealt with this on a Tacoma, but isn't there an evap valve that vents on the filler hose area that you're supposed to close before doing a smoke test?
I just did a smoke test on another car, and it poured smoke out the gas cap area, but it wasn't from a leak it was because I didn't jumper and close an evap valve there

I've been getting the same code and started by replacing my engine bay evap lines. However, after reading more about it on Tacomaworld, I believe the issue was either the flexible hose between the filler neck and the gas tank (77213-04020) or the seal between the gas tank and the fuel pump (77169-04010). I replaced both at the same time, so I can't narrow it down more than that and both had very obvious signs of corrosion/degradation. The hoses between the gas tank and charcoal canister on my truck are delaminating as well, so I'll be replacing those soon. But for now my CEL has not come back on.

If you choose to change the seal between the gas tank and fuel pump, be very careful with the bolts. They're tiny. PB blaster and some very gentle coaxing are the way forward. I broke the head off one of the bolts and not sure how to get it out without emptying the tank since it sits flush with the top of the flange:annoyed:

You have to isolate vent from system before you smoke it. Otherwise the smoke will pour from filler neck.

Pinching sometimes isn't 100% effective. I like to take hose off and plug vent somehow.

Yes. Make it mechanically impossible for smoke to flow through it.
