I watched a review video and the reviewer stated that the 4th gen auto trans has a cable shifter not an electronic shifter so that with no power the trans can be shifted to neutral. Is this true?

Yes, there's a little plastic piece beside the shifter that can be popped out and be manually shifted in neutral in case of total power failure. Can't remember what you do once that little cover is removed, but it's there.

Yes? So you're saying yes it has a cable shifter but then you say it has a trans disconnect lever. It can't have both. It either has a traditional cable shifter so you can move the shifter to neutral without power or it has an electronic shifter and a hidden disconnector for when you have no power.

It can have a cable with this feature. All it does it undo the shift interlock without turning on the truck.

I think it's a cable shifter like Delta09 says there is a shift lock release, and it sounds like it functions like all previous Tacomas.

Looks to still be cable operated.
Even on transmissions with an electronic shifter every one I have seen has a manual park release somewhere either on the transmission or inside via a lever or cable to allow the vehicle to be rolled in the event of a failure.

OK, now I get it. Thanks. So not electronic but just has a switch to override the brake lock.

Yea, luckily Toyota still does this. On some modern GM's there's no way to try and get the transmission in neutral (electronic) which sucks because fuel pump control modules on those is a wear item o_O

Yes that I knew. Both my Challenger and Grand Cherokee have a lever to pull up to disconnect the trans if you needed to get towed. Having a cable actuated trans rather than electronic is just another plus for the Tacoma in my quandary of whether to get another GC or the Tacoma.

The electronic parking brake would still need to be disengaged if you were trying to move the truck after getting it in to neutral.

Aaaand here you go raining our parade. I honestly didn't think about it.

Any tow truck operator worth their salt can get around this easy if flatbedded though.

Yeah towing a vehicle with the parking brake on is a regular occurrence and not a issue at all.

Yeah no problem for a tow truck operator. I like that Toyota used the shifter they used and the the electric parking brake is industry standard like most new vehicles and the components used.
