I ain't touching it. No really, I wanted to get a nice tune in it front he start but Banks Performance won't touch the van 7.3 as they bricked too many ECUs. Something is different to them than the trucks, which I took as a hint to leave it alone. Plus it's a slippery slope. I'm not intercooled, which is part of the problem, and although I have the bigger turbo than the trucks, heat becomes a concern. So I would need to add in something to monitor egt, and then I would want a 4" turbo back exhaust to help with temps... It just goes. And for what, it keeps up with traffic, it cruises at 65-70 just fine. It's not going to ever be fast or peppy lol so I just don't need power.

Thats fair, dont fix whats not broke. After a quick search, seems they were tuned as a fleet vehicle which makes some difference, Banks IMO is not as knowledgeable with 7.3s as other reputable companies/tuners. But it very much is a rabbit hole. But I did not realize they were non-intercooled. Only have so much real estate up front i suppose.

    @Wulf

As part of clean up, think I mentioned how often I need to throw away plants

This is jungle val and it throws out shoots and grows rapidly without effort; I'm constantly yanking some out to keep the front clear

    20250206_100949.jpg

And java fern is another but it sprouts new growth directly from its leaves

    20250206_101002.jpg

Normally goes to the garbage but the last few times I gave some to a neighbor

Now he insists on getting more and gives me between $10-20 bucks for some so I set these aside since he doesn't run co2 and it grows slower in his tanks

    20250206_103643.jpg

Floaters too, this is after I yanked out a few handfuls to throw away

When I spoke with banks on the phone, they were very particular about what I had, if it was an E-seried chassis cab, I was good, but a E-seried van, it was a problem.

And while there may be other tuners out there, and maybe I put banks on a podium, I remember seeing fords with the little banks badge in the side and thinking it was cool and knew it was a hotrod. If they won't touch it, I felt they had grounds to. They seem to be good at the engineering side of things, vs some companies whose parts are for show or simply don't consider all the factors at play.

And yeah, it's tight packaging for sure. The motor isn't even centered between the frame rales, it's kicked over two inches to the passenger side so there's enough room for the pedal box. Passenger side has a very small foot well as a result.

I'd say Banks were part of the select few companies that pioneered the tuned diesel revolution for sure. But have since left it to niche 7.3 companies.

I encourage you to research further into companies like Jelibuilt, CNC Fabrication, Power Hungry Performance, 1023 Diesel, Nightshift Diesel, SDK, Blessed Performance, Bitterroot Diesel, just to name a few if you ever decide you want to enhance performance. Many if not all can get you taken care of.

huh, i definitely took for granted how much that stuff could grow lol. It’s cool that you’re hooking up the neighbors to help out their tanks too

even a transmission only tune can do a lot, I liked the Quick Tricks transmission only tune on my 6.0l, it helped hauling/towing a bunch just from better gear selection and shift points

Absolutely, most of them increase line pressure and provide a quicker, firmer shift. Makes them so much more driveable. Had a John Woods valve body in my 7.3 too that helped a lot.

I could see that, be nice if it waited to spoil the turbo a bit before downshifting on hills in the highway. I can manually get it to hold a gear and maintain speed but on cruise control it gives up too soon and downshifts. Wish I had the 5 spd, not a lot you can do with the 4spd.
In 4lo the 1-2 shift is already a neck snapper, no more line pressure please

4spd is the downfall of these trucks/vans. If the 5r110 had been available with a 7.3, itd be much more enjoyable.

    Bit torque-y ha?

Trying to get a lawnmower working for some friends and I can't get the starter motor to engage. Specifically the plunger isn't engaged. I don't have a service manual and some else worked on it before me so I might be missing something simple. I'm assuming something is wired wrong. I swapped out the starter solenoid and the starter motor without any changes. The starter has power and spins just doesn't actually engage anyone have an idea?

Bypass the relay to rule out the starter itself is bad? Swap positive posts on the relay/ key switch wires. Possibility of a bad key switch?

Edit: Missed that the starter spins. So you can disregard my whole reply probably, I agree with @Wulf suggestion lol.

It's what limits my speed on the highway haha if I cruise at 75mph, I can't downshift to 3rd!! Too much rpm. I always thought a conversion the the 5sp would be a cool upgrade and help make the 7.3 less of a dog.

Plenty of power in low, no doubt but if you don't lift off at the shift it lurches hard forward into second. Makes you spill your beer if you're not careful. Allegedly.

I hear you on the downshift, but it downshifts to 2nd usually, then kicks up shortly after to 3rd and TC locked. That's why initially you see that huge spike in RPMS's. If I knew a hill was coming, I would hit OD Off so it downshifts to 3rd Locked. Typically it was when towing, otherwise cruising 75-85, I had enough RPM's.

    The infamous alleged trail beer...
