Someone at my child's school said they were going to bring a gun and shoot someone. I reported it to the school and clarified I didn't hear it myself but in the off chance that it's a real threat, I would feel terrible not saying something.

I got a phone call from the kid's dad asking why I told the school. In what world is it ok for the school to do that?

Devil’s advocate, might not have been direct from the school? That kid might have only said it to your kid so the logic follows that you must’ve told the school.

I would report this to the police to deal with. First the threat, then, seems to me, harassment.

I wouldn't care. Colorado already has a history of gun violence in schools. One of my kids turned in another for threats of hurting themselves. They are no longer friends, but come to find out the kid was already cutting themselves on the legs.

I would also be contacting the school board...and possibly going a different direction. Policy doesn't seem to change until it hurts financially.

    100%

How many times have we heard "well they did say XXX but didn't think they were serious" or the infamous "they were on the FBI watch list for the past two years."

    fix what?
make the situation go away cuz he knows?

You cant fix the situation, he knows.....
You can go to the school & to the individual at the school you spoke to in-person...
or did you just called it in & you have no idea who you actually spoke to?
Not over the phone, & give him an earful.......
try & sue the school district like every other parent....:duel:

or try & get some answers to what could have happened....

the modern day of the internet. If the dads child put 2 & 2 together,
your child could have been the only one that could have heard it.......
    ding, ding, ding..
knows your last name, area you live, doesnt even need to know your first name....
For some folks, all the information is readily available on the internet, if the dad has a clue & knows how to navigate it...
address, phone #, relatives, jobs, siblings, children, etc...
    just saying..

that being said, was the dad level headed during the conversation or irrational, losing his shit....
if kid is talking about guns & violence, may have learned it from dad......

question is do you drop it & pray nothing comes of it, do you tell your local authority / sheriff of the situation, the guy some how got your #, you only told the school so you suspect a leak, etc.....

    I analyze everything, it's what I do...
    rationally, logically, maybe...

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
This. Actually, the police would've been the first call, then the school.

Is it ok for the school to release your information?
    I probably wouldn't like it.

    I mean, I can't say I'd be furious either.
I suppose it all depends on how the conversation went?

    How old was the kid?

I would have just told the father why I did it.
You were concerned for your child's safety, as well as the other student.
Along with HIS child's safety. Maybe the kid needs help?
Maybe someone should find out why the kid wants to shoot people?

Lots of good things can come from conversation, if both parties can think and act logically.

I'd want an immediate sit down with the principal (in confidence from my kid as well) I'd want answers.

People should report all threats, doesn't mean they need to arrest the kid, just ask him and the parents if the threat is valid. Move on. It needs to stay anonymous.
