i knew my truck doesnt have much power but i didnt know it didnt have ANY power. i was heading to the bay area and i was going up the altamont, i had to floor it just to make it up the hill going 60 mph, or when i go to pass a car i again have to floor it and the speedo barely moves. ok enough bitching.

i was thinking of trading in my truck for an used access cab or double cab. i have found 3 that seem pretty good for me.

here is the first one i found http://modestotoyota.com/preowned/i...oublecab_prerunner/vehicle/5TEJU62N35Z108429/

it is a double cab which isnt really important now but i figure it will be when the time to comes to crank out some little mcleod90s, black is always a plus, has all the features my base model doesn't have.

the bad about it is obviously the ridiculous high miles. i drive maybe 1000 miles a month and that is pushing it.

this one is probably way to high for my budget http://modestotoyota.com/preowned/i...sr5_double_cab_v6/vehicle/5TELU42N86Z277196/#

    the other one is http://www.pleasantonauto.com/detail-2005-toyota-tacoma-used-6893796.html

the good it has less miles, its a 4wd

the bads its not a double cab.

and what is a good website to look at your trade in value? i kbb and it said mine in good condition is $17,070

Yeah, the key is having 5 sp manual in the 2.7. You can make the most of your power. You can downshift while climbing those hills and make the climb with ease. Good luck with your decision.

when i was test driving the 2011 tacomas, i ended up with a standard, because the auto's were way worse then the standards as far as power. there also in my opinion was an issue with it switching back and forth from 3rd, and 4th gear in the auto

My '10 AC AT has plenty of power and accelation in my opinion. Just this morning on an empty divided road I was sitting at 60 and with little or no effort was at 85 with more to spare.

The 6 have all the power you'll ever want but it comes at a cost they are not exactly easy on gas.

I did the same move. My 2.7 got bogged down and lugged terribly when loaded with people and gear. Downshifting doesn't work when you're in first! lol

I get 19-20mpg with the 6 auto, not a bad trade off from the 22-23 I got with the 2.7. Well worth it I think.

If your making many trips in hilly conditions and it bothers you to not be able to rip up the hills, then ok. But if this is an occasional thing, you may want to think about it...
I do have the 2.7L with the manual, and have had no need for more power or speed in traffic thus far. ( I did not say desire :D )

I had a 96 Tacoma with the 2.7l 5sp manual and sold it for a 08 access cab v6 auto.
    Man! What a difference!
My 08 is much more enjoyable to drive, and to be honest I don't really notice a difference in fuel economy as I always had my 2.7l to the floor, and I'm not that fast of a driver as the max speed limit here is 60mph (I would TRY to cruise around 70).

I can only imagine a 2.7l 05+ tacoma is worse as it is a bigger and heavier truck then the previous tacomas despite the slight increase in hp.

    Don't get me wrong, I love toyota's 4 cyl as I have had a 84 4runner, 85 4runnet, 86 camry and a 96 Tacoma. All with 4 cylinders and all were great vehicles.

Having said that I don't regret it at all moving up to the 4.0l, and I'm sure you won't either providing you find one at a good price.

    Just my two cents....

I just bought a 5 speed 2.7 access cab 4x4 about a month ago and to tell you the truth the day i bought it i was tempted to drive back and get a 4.0 since it felt so slow! Especially after trading in a 13 second car for this truck. Anyways after getting used to the power and how to drive it i love this truck! Especially i love the fact of getting 24 mpg. Especially when im dropping $4 bucks a gallon on gas and driving 140 miles a day. Now that im used to the truck i wouldnt trade it for the world! I love this truck, the 4 banger keeps me out of trouble and is also extremely fun for wheeling since it seems to be rather torquey and since im used to driving jeeps as well. Anyways regardless of the prices of everything i would still rather drive my 5 speed 2.7 over a 4.0. Also since about all the 4.0s are autos and i beileve autos are reserved for the females.. anyone can drive one of them whats the fun in that??

Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
I tow several times a month, 3000 - 5000 # loads, so the 4 cyl wasn't an option for me...but if all I did was drive the truck around I think I'd go 4 cyl.

However, just a thought about gas mileage.

I bought my wife a '11 equinox with the 4cyl eco-drive whatever engine (marketing crap). It claims 32 MPG highway. I normally get 28 Hwy and I drive very conservative and keep the truck unloaded. I think Chevy is very liberal with their MPG numbers.

On the other hand, my Taco said 21 Hwy with the v6, and I've gotten as good as 26MPG with a wind at my back doing 65 on the HWY. I can easily hit 20 - 22 all day long. Numbers are very "real world'.

With all that said, I drive my mom's v6 equinox around, and I feel the MPG is about the same if not sometimes better than my 4cyl equinox. It's a heavy crossover vehicle and I think the 4 is struggling to move it.

That's why I think the v6 taco is the best choice for me, and I dont' think my fuel mileage is bad considering I have that extra power when it's tow time, but everyone's needs are different. If I lived in they city and didn't have access to a trailer, and didn't need one. I think i'd have got the access cab 4cy, so I could have a longer bed (I have the short bed DC), and better city MPG.

But seriously, don't get hung on gas prices. I put 91 in my truck and it's about $4 / gallon, which works out to about an average tank price of $65 bucks with today's prices. That's really only a $15 - $20 / tank increase from when I had my first taco in 2006 buying $2.00 gas. Considering I drive about 2500 - 3000 miles a month for work, that's working out to be around $100 - $125 bucks more a month in gas withv~ 8 fillups. Most people don't drive nearly that much.

I waste alot more money than ~ $100 a month of stupider things like junkfood and electrnoic's purchases than I do on gas that I need to go from point A to B.

Are the autos really that bad in the 2.7? I can downshift to 4th or even 3rd in the situations mentioned by the OP and have power to spare. Are we driving the same engine??

Depending on how hilly it is the 2.7 really is pretty weak. On level ground my 5-speed works great, and on most good sized hills (small mountains) a downshift to 4th is all that is needed to maintain highway speed. In most of those cases I could probably maintain my speed by slamming the pedal to the floor in 5th, but who wants to do that?

There has been a time or two I have had to downshift to third to maintain 70MPH going up some mountains in WV. I could see how living in the rockies and having the auto would suck pretty bad...

I agree with most of these people though, when you trade in a truck you still owe on you VERY rarely come out ahead. Especially after taxes, dealer fees, etc. BTW, you won't get anything close to 17k for a five-lugger on trade. Even if the thing is CHERRY... they are like 16k new... I'd say you're looking more around 12k-13.5k as a reasonable trade-in amount.

Also, you really want to give up something with less than 20,000 miles (assuming) for something with almost 100,000? Sure, Taco's last, but how long do these second gens really last on average? Nobody knows... In any event, that 80,000 mile difference or more is about 5 years worth of driving...

Why do you need a 4x4? Is the 2wd not doing something you need it to do? Maybe you could trade it for a prerunner v6 instead of a 4x4? Could save yourself thousands on that alone...

If you can walk and chew gum you can drive a manual.Nothing special about that.I drove a manual for 25 yrs. And I would much rather drive an auto. I can still pick what gear I want if need be.

It's all about the 5 speed with the 2.7 I-4. I haven't been in a situation where I truly NEEDED more power. I've hauled 1700+ lbs. without issue.

Thanks for all the responses. Gas prices aren't really a big deal to me. I live 2 miles from work and right across the street from the gym. And right now I'm getting about 21 mpg so a few less isn't going to hurt me for the extra power.

The problem could be that I have an auto. Or it could be that I am 250 lbs ;). Either way it bothers me enough to consider trading it in.

I am going to go look around today and test drive a v6. If I don't like the numbers that come up then I'll just walk and still have a great truck with no balls.

I have 4 banger and I run 31's with stock 3.33 gears. Ya I gotta shift a lot, BUT never felt like I want more power. Just different gears maybe 4.10 or 4.56...

The 5speed makes all the difference. Auto combined with small engine and a truck just sucks...

OP, out of the 3 trucks you listed, I'd have to go with the last one. Looks like you'll save about 4 grand getting an access cab instead of a double. Plus with the way these trucks hold value, if you really needed to step up to a double cab down the line, it wouldnt be such a big deal
