Leveling system for uneven campsite??

Hi all,

I am looking to get a leveling system for my truck with a Kimbo slide in camper.
My goal is to level out uneven ground to keep the truck and camper level at dispersed campsites.

Looks like there are two basic systems...

Looking for thoughts and ideas on which system would work best for a pickup truck with slide in camper??
Any recommendation on either system, benefits/drawbacks etc??

I've looked at both, haven't decided yet just which way to go. I'm leaning more towards the blocks. They look like they will be easier to pack/take less room and would be easier to set when by myself.

I've always just looked around for rocks to park a tire or 2 on top of. Being on the West side of the country, it's rare not to be able to find the right rock. But failing that, I then dig a small hole and drop the tire into the hole to level the truck. Makes for one less thing (kit) to carry around in/on the truck taking up space/adding weight.

I do know finding rocks wouldn't be much of an option in some areas though (Florida & areas of the South probably a good example, though I also suspect there aren't very many unlevel spots in Florida either).

Ramp levels worked real good for our motorhome though.

 

2nd these. I have had them for years and they have held up well in the desert and forests here in AZ.

 

I did the same (and still do when I forget to pack them), but they don't take up much bed space and make setup faster/easier when it's dark and/or you have to move rocks aways, so I think there really aren't any downsides. They're great for those times when you're parked on pavement and moving rocks around isn't kosher, too (eg: campsites in Yosemite).

 

That's a good point.

I've rarely camped in Yosemite or other paved (or highly-controlled) areas myself though, I'm more of a dispersed-campsite person.

 

I carry some 2x10s about 10-12” long. Originally to put under the bottle jack in soft or uneven places. They’ve gotten more use as blocks, or ramps resting on rocks or a piece of firewood for height. I’ve also dug a hole for a tire as previously mentioned.

 

I use lynx levelers and I have a set of Camco’s also. They work well both in dispersed and state park environments.




This was a great site but it had a really deep rut in the pad. The lynx levelers worked really well to level out the trailer and provide a stable footing. We bought the Camco’s after this trip and two sets have proved beneficial.

 

Just go into walmart and buy the yellow camco for like 35 bucks.

I think I am leaning towards the block system as well.

I previously checked out the Lynx Levelers and Camco Levelers on Amazon.
Both seemed like good options, but I was worried that those are both only 8.5" wide though, while my truck tires are 10.7" wide.

I then found this option with 10.5" wide leveling blocks...

Has anyone ever had an issue using the 8.5" wide leveling blocks with larger tires??
Did you crack the edges of the blocks since the tires were larger than them??
Would the tires be harmed in anyway with 1" or so of overhang on each side??

Not sure if its worth the extra money to get the larger blocks.

I have the 8’s and run 295 70 17’s. No issues, no slide off’s, no cracks or damage to the tires. The larger ones are nice but take up more space when stored.

 

I bought these and they work fine. On the beach a piece of plywood or even plastic would help to keep them from sinking but they still worked good.

 

i highly recommend the camco version. the camping group i'm usually with (entirely trailer-campers, in curated rv parks, with concrete or gravel rv parking areas) has entirely migrated to them for everyone.

the main advantage is that the handle twist-locks through them all, there's space for mud/dirt. the carrying bags are nice in theory, but it's always like trying to fit a tent back in the bag it came in. someone's cursing at an engineer somewhere...

as far as the size, it really depends on what kind of storage area you've got to deal with. i think the smaller one's are perfectly fine for most cases, and remain compact for transport as well.

After thinking it through, I decided to buy the Camco Fasten XL blocks. I like how the 10.5" wide blocks provide a larger footprint for my truck tires. Camco also claims that the XL blocks are 2x stronger than their regular blocks. I guess time will tell if that is true or not. I really like the t-handle twist lock design that Camco uses as well. Looking forward to trying them out once I pickup the Kimbo.

Block levelers is my vote and what I use/ does not take up much space either
