Very loud valves noise

Hi guys

2008 tacoma 2.7
I have a very loud noise from the valves , what would be the issue and what is causing that? And after fixing the issue do i need to replace the oil pump as well? Can be the oil pump which caused the valves to fail?

The 2.7 Liter 2TRFE engine has hydraulic lifters. A collapsed hydraulic lifter could be a cause or low oil pressure.
Why do you think it is the valves making the noise?

It could be a lot of things... Stretched timing chain is one.
How many miles do you have on the engine?

 

I am not 100% sure it’s the valves but from my experience i am assuming that .. it has 181k miles

 

I would suspect the timing chain and guides before the valve lifters...

 

The timing chain or the guides will sound will like ticking (more like a crank sound) ?

 

Any other possibilities?

Get a mechanics stethoscope and locate the exact area where it is coming from.

 

I just took it to the workshop and the mechanic guy said that the sound is coming from the crank shaft

 

How much it will cost to do a full rebuild for the engine? And what parts are recommended to replace (which doesn’t matter if it’s in good condition or no) ?

 

Well from the crankshaft "area"... That is a long way from the valves.

You need to know that in that area you have the timing chain and guides also the balance shafts and drive chains.

This isn't something you can diagnose on the internet. Could you maybe post a video of the noise that you are hearing.

I will say that is no valve noise at all.

Lets try some things first.

Remove the Serpentine belt so we aren't driving any other pulleys etc.
Start the engine and do the same as you did in the video.
If the noise is gone you know that it is one of the driven components. A/C, Alternator, Idler Pulley, Water Pump, Power Steering, Etc...

Make sure the fan isn't hitting the shroud.

 

when i was driving the car I felt like some abnormal movement in the transmission when the sound is coming.. today I took it to the workshop and guy said its definitely the crank shaft.. why I am believing that because months ago there was a light ticking sound coming but when once i changed the oil it completely disappeared then after 2k miles it came again.. it was light ticking until I went offroading (driving full rpm most of the time) then suddenly the ticking sound became super loud.

If assuming the issue is the crank shaft.. what part most likely i will to change and how much it will cost me?

I was thinking if I had a do a full rebuild for the engine why I do go with high performance parts replacement ? At least more power and a heavy duty for hard usage

 

From the sounds of your statement I see a new engine in your future...

A pan drop and inspection is in order.
I've seen guys get lucky and catch a bad rod bearing or piston pin before it's too late.
But that's not exactly how "it's supposed to work".

A new engine or rebuild is "how it should work".

 

Driving full RPM most of the time? What does that mean? Running at redline?

That is just asking for what you have now.

Now I am planning to do a full rebuild but want to know the approximate cost and which parts I should not miss replacing them .. does it worth a get H beam connecting rods + a high compression pistons.. etc ( u know where am going)

 

There is no way to know what you are asking without tearing the engine down to discover what is damaged and what is not damaged.As for the cost, nobody will be able to tell you that before it is torn apart and evaluated properly. Which is an additional cost above the rebuild cost.

In my humble opinion judging from the sounds of your engine you have a bad rod bearing at a bare minimum.
Did you check the oil for metal when you changed the oil?

I'd would just get a low mileage used engine and put that in.

As far as your question above it appears you are hinting at building up a 4 banger with stronger rods, pistons, etc... That would just be a waste of money. The 2TR-FE is a very strong engine and will take a lot of abuse from the factory.
