Warn CE M80000, is this winch worth rebuilding?

Connected properly, still no dice.

 

Something is wrong.

Probably would have gotten smoke the first time if everything was good.

 

Here are my measurements with the relay pack connected, i.e. there may be some leakage, but not much.
F1 to F2 under an ohm.
A to ground under an ohm.
F1 and/or F2 to ground ~75,000 ohms.

 

F1 to F2 is .4 ohms.
A to ground is 492 ohms.
F1 to ground is open line.
F2 to ground is open line.

 

Your suspicions may be correct as to the brushes, however, try one thing before taking it apart - measure the A to ground while turning the shaft by hand. I would expect it to be variable or scratchy but should be low as in an ohm or so. Give it a few slow revolutions all while monitoring the meter.

I believe your prior pictures showed a pretty good cleaning job, post #6. What did you clean the brushes with - any chemicals or metals that could be embedded in the material - my first impression was you replaced them, but now think you cleaned instead.

 

I used vinegar, dawn, baking soda, and finally some 150 grit sandpaper on the comm and the brushes.

 

Just guessing it may depend up on the sandpaper grit material. Some sandpaper is just mini rock, possibly imbedded in the soft brush material acting as an insulator. Perhaps a brass brush could be used to work them over. If you do take it a part do ohm each armature contact. No shorts between adjacent contacts and a corresponding continuity across the opposite side. I’ve never had to do this to a motor.

No update. I haven't had the time. Not really sure when I will get back around to this. I guess I have to pull it apart and test the comm to wire connections. Might have an issue in the endbell...

Update! She is purring like a kitten. Runs great in both directions. The problem ended up being between the endbell and the motor can.

They weren't making contact.



Patched up and good to go. I'll get to the spool brake next. Then reassembly!

I'm not painting it. I like the used look. And it's pretty damned used. It will end up a hitch winch. So, it will live most of its life in a garage when not in use. It's been through the shit and now it will likely live the pampered life. Only being called into use when necessary.

Edit: I did consider painting the inside, but that would have been for corrosion resistance.

 

Oil and grease resolve the corrosion on the inside.

The only thing I can see that you do not show was the sealing of the extra drain hole on the motor side.

Looks like you splurged on a few new parts too. Tie bars, fasteners and one end plate drum support.

Is that a water-resistant grease?

OK, I think I found it - the direction of rotation arrow label on the gear case.

 

You got it! I even took the time to make sure I had the direction right before I reassembled it and I still did it wrong. It was an easy fix. Just peeled and flipped the sticker. All good now.

Oh, it's gonna work! After all this! Everything feels good. The gears turn, the free spool functions and the motor runs. I fully expect it to work. I still need a winch plate and some synthetic rope. I went through the relay box previously so I expect that to work as well.

I didn't seal the extra drain port on the motor either but I wouldn't call that a miss. This motor had no gaskets to speak of and is by no means water tight or even anything resembling it. I don't expect it to sit in the rain or get wet otherwise very often as it will be a removable hitch winch.

I only bought the parts I had to. The tie bars and that one endplate were all busted. The Allen screws came with the tie bars.

The grease is just Mobile 1 synthetic. It's not marine grease or anything. Again, I'm not expecting this to get wet often, if ever.

I will update more as this becomes a fully functional tool.

 

With all the rust you encountered I would expect the relays to be rusty as well. If your wishes do not turn out, this newer contactor seems to be working well for me:

Congrats to everyone involved in this restoration. My question is I can't help but notice Chinesium winches getting good press, are modern Warn winches made as good today as these older brutes?
