Amanda’s semi-retired HVAC tech neighbor has bestowed upon me a 2007 Lennox 3-ton heat pump and matching air handler!

 

Quite the opposite; I got it for free, so I’m gonna make money!

 

The unit was functional when taken out of service, but the condenser coil was literally disintegrating, and the customer wanted a more efficient system…

 

I think that a dog might have lifted his leg on it…

 

One difference between heat pumps and straight-cool units is that heat pumps have a defrost control board, as seen here…

 

Most, if not all, of the central A/C systems that I’ve disemboweled over the last year have had condenser fan motors with two or three blades. This is the first complete Lennox unit I’ve gotten my hands on, and I believe that this is also the first 4-blade fan that I’ve seen…

 

You know how discharge capacitors? Right?

Those things can rock your world if you grab them "wrong".

 

I generally don’t touch them. They just go into the scrapyard with the ferrous metals. Does discharging them involve a screwdriver?

 

Yes.

 

The easiest way to tell a heat pump from straight-cool A/C is to look down through the fan grille. A heat pump, like my recently acquired Lennox here, has a reversing valve and some extra copper tubing…

 

This was definitely one of the easiest units to take apart in my experience…

 

Carrier goes by the week of manufacture, and Trane has the actual month. There are 52 weeks in a year, so I’m assuming that the Lennox came off the line on May 8th, 2007. In my opinion, this is not a bad run for a builder grade heat pump!

 

November 2007, so it was in service for just over 17 years…

 

When I was in aviation school we used to toss them to people and say catch, lol.

 

From a distance, or to the untrained eye, you would think this is an intact A/C with the protective mesh removed…

 

But then you see the compressor right next to it…
