Got my first truck, 2011 4x4 double cab Tacoma. I bought some 20” wheels on 33x12 tires. I’ve heard a 3” lift is the minimum I could go without cutting and still having full turn radius? I’m looking for the best bang for the buck of course but looking to try and maintain good ride quality. Other than driving across the fields once a month to fill up the deer feeders and a few dirt roads, I don’t do any off roading. Bilstein I’ve heard is a great manufacturer. With these bigger wheels, do I need to upgrade my brakes or upper control arms? Any input is appreciated to this first time truck owner.

And yes, you'll need upper control arms - Readylift makes ones as well that will work the the above. Get 2 Bilstein 5100's in back and you are good to go. It's not crazy, but sufficient for what you are using the truck for. I have this very setup after blowing through a Toytec setup and I'm much happier.

    wtf.

lifting these trucks 3" is a great way to ride like garbage, you will have no down travel.

Spacer lifts are not a great option.

    Stock brakes are fine

Bilsteins are very decent. Headstrong, Toytec, and a couple others are great sources for them.

Your 20"s will be laughed at by the majority of Toyota owners, sorry.

There is more to tire clearance than just lift. For instance, a large lift with poor wheel selection will having rubbing issues where a small lift with proper wheel selection might have no rubbing. I run 33s (255/85r16) on a 1.5" lift with no rubbing.
If you want better capability and ride quality, ditch the 20s and go with 16s or 17s and don't do a 3" lift.

I recommend watching the following video:

    -20" wheels. No
    -33x12. No.

    Fix known problems. There's two.

You’ll see this forum is biased against anything above 3inches.

i had a 3 inch lift initially at the influence of this forum. Hated it.

switched to a full strut 6inch lift and I love it. Should have done it from the get go.

best is relatively subjective for the most part.

I have a (and I’m sure heads will roll) a rough country lift. I’ve had rough country on several trucks over the years. Never had any issues with them. I don’t know why it gets so much hate on here. Maybe cause it’s affordable? I dunno. I feel like a lot of opinions are repeated. I had a toytec 3 inch with SPC UCA’s and a AAL.

I’m about to switch back to factory UCA’s cause they fine for DB lifts and the ball joint replacements for the SPC are retarded. I didn’t like the 3 inch cause the angles it put everything at up front plus the ride plus the look.

it’s your truck man, do what you want but I can tell you that the 6inch rough country doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets here.
