Brake line recall

I’m more concerned with wheel rotation damage by Discount Tire.

 

It don't take much to drop the wheel when you are lining things up that's when I do it myself and being careful.

 

LOL....and they just took me for $1400 too.

 

Mudding isn't the only place this is an issue. Having driven thousands of miles on common run of the mill forest service roads in British Columbia and Alaska, I can tell you this will be an issue for people simply doing basic travel in these places. A little rain and a typical northwest dirt forest service road will cake the inside of wheel rims in a layer of mud several inches thick that hardens like Roman concrete. If Toyota's solution isn't to reroute this brake line the 4G Tacoma will not be a viable vehicle for people driving routes on these basic roads.

 

UPDATE REGARDING RECALL:

As mentioned in one of my replies in this thread, I pick up my 2025 TRD-OR tomorrow. Unless I’m mistaken, my 17” wheels should have had the same brake line recall as mentioned in the order, however I looked up the VIN and asked my salesman and my vehicle does not have a stop sale order or a recall. So they either fixed the issue for new 2025’s or I’m missing something. Maybe the non-premium package has smaller brakes ? Maybe the 6ft bed models have a different brake line routing?

I’ll be sure to update this thread with pics if indeed Toyota fixed the new models coming out, as an obvious measure to not stop production on the vehicles.

 

That's probably right. I would think the production fix would be in place before issuing the recall. That or the lines are the same and the recall will be expanded to include later trucks.

I think the recall will be expanded no matter what they are currently doing at the factory.

 

Agreed they’ll likely expand the recall. I would be surprised if they send out the same trucks with an unsafe brake line without the stop sale or recall on the new ones coming out of the factory. Really curious about what my back wheel well will look like and I’ll upload a pic directly to this thread…

I don't think the Premium package makes a difference. I'm trying to suss out if there's different brake parts for different trims. There seems to be two different versions of the brake rotors and calipers. These parts diagrams on the Toyota parts website don't seem to jibe with the anything else on there and this crap is damned near impossible to read. There's numbers associated with parts and I can easily identify which part is which, but the numbers don't correspond to anything.

RockAuto sells two different brake rotors, though they don't have anything for certain models. For fronts, they have one part for SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunners. The other is for Limited, TRD Sport i-FORCE MAX, TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX, and Limited i-FORCE MAX. There's nothing that seems to work for the regular TRD Sports or Off-Roads. Right now. The rear rotors seem to have a version for regular models and a version for hybrids. I can't tell what the difference is.

Suffice it to say, there does seem to be some difference between trims but it's not clear what it is. Regardless, it doesn't look like the hose routing is any different and that's the problem.

 

Here's my situation: I purchased a '24 SR5 4x4. The XP Predator package it came with included an "upgrade" to 18" rims with craptastic plastic covers (that's another story). Since the truck normally comes with 17" rims, will I be covered? When I log into my dashboard at Toyota's site I see the recall notification sentence on the page that loads but when I click on the "more" link it doesn't show any recall for my vehicle.

On another note, why did they run the brake line to come into the back of the bracket, thus requiring the large loop in the rubber line that's causing the problem? Had they run it to the front of the bracket, it's a short path to the caliper connection.

So check this out - I went on the NHTSA recall website to find out how they got involved. More curious than anything. I submitted a claim back on July '24 with a safety concern (and pictures) regarding the brake line design, rather than an accident complaint. The other 3 complaints are fairly recent. Wonder if that started the investigation... We'll never know

 

I have a '24 OR Premium Hybrid and my truck is not subject to the recall. My truck has a 11/24 production date. The routing of the rear soft brake line is much different from the pictures in this thread. The soft line on my truck is almost flush with the top of the dust shield and rotor on my rear brakes.

I'm guessing being a hybrid is the reason for the difference?

 

I cancelled my appointment because it’s clear dealers are not in a position to implement a fix.

 

I think I heard Sheldon mutter something about the reliability of drum brakes on prior models.

 

Can you please post a picture of what yours looks like!?!?!

 

Snow slush and ice on a snowy interstate. Can cause the line to rupture just like mud.

 

I know Commercial Grade was used to describe the turbo, IDK if CG made its way to the brake lines.

 

It's the same. My wheel is a little bigger.
