I know this is a really old dead thread, but I'm genuinely curious.

I did my very first oil change on my truck at 20k miles. (first 3 included in dealer service)

I took out just at 5 quarts as it didn't overflow the 5 quart container the new oil came in, but I added another quart from another bottle. I can't read this dipstick to save my life to be honest and I've looked at it every direction I can.

Maybe the new oil is too clear and my eyes are getting old.

Is the engine capacity the same on the 2nd and 3rd gen engines?

Fill with 6 quarts and it is at the full mark on the dipstick every time. I also scuffed up the dipstick with scotchbrite and it improved reading the dipstick tremendously.

    I have a 126K miles on my 2015 4 cylinder.

I have always used 5 quarts to refill my oil. This puts it 1/2 inch OVER the filled mark. The reason I use 5 quarts instead of less is because of the manual saying it needed 6 quarts. I just couldn't bring myself to use only 4.5 quarts when the manual calls for 6. So I split the difference with 5 and now I'm over the filled mark every time. No problems so far. Oil changed every 5K miles.

Since new in 2014, I put in 5.5 quarts. Gets it to full line every time.

Toyota is smarter than us, or we'd be making our own motors.... the dipstick is wrong. 242k on my 2TRE-FE with 6 qts at every oil change and it runs like new - no joke.

Here is where I think you are making a mistake checking your oil. When checking oil dip stick only gets pushed down to black ring on dip stick. or at the point you feel the first tension while pushing down. if you are pushing dip still all the way down you are pushing too far. which in turn will make 5 qts. seem full. If 6 qts it will seem over full if pushed all the way down. Sounds like that oil change place finally hired a tech that reads the book. always go by the book/ manual. Toyota makes these trucks for years, They know what they are doing, it's not the dip stick, it's the Dipstick! Have fun with this on yall.

;) My 2.7L has 242,300 miles and I've used 0W-30 for the last 150,000 of those miles x 6 quarts. It drives like new and it's smooth. YZZD1 and Mobil 1 0W30, ALL year.

And this is why you wipe the dip stick when you pull it out initially. Then check. It's 6qts brother.

    6 qts
    .2 qt short of full.
6.2 qt capacity with filter change on Gen 3 2.7,s
Like the large oil capacity of the 2.7.

5.5 qts just dumping the pan IIRC..
Why anyone would do just that?
Just mixing dirty oil in the filter into your new oil by not changing the filter.

1st pull on dipstick cold engine give ya the best read.
Level on my dipstick might be 3/16" at the most just short of full mark

Rest of the pulls it seems to me you are just getting oil run down read in dipstick tube all up and down the dipstick.

You might get a decent read off 2nd pull.

Fresh clean Oil is difficult to see at times.

Been reading about guys scuffing up the dipstick.
    Sounds like a good idea.

1st pull is your money read....

I agreed with all but first pull being money read.
