It’s kind of cool. The same candy store and toy store I went to is still going strong in Tahoe city. My sons still goes today. It is nostalgic

We had a corner store that sold sponge taffy.
It was a giant yellow brick that sat on wax paper on the counter.
The owner would chop off a piece for a nickel. Yum!

Remember when you could ride your bikes anywhere....and no one cared. As long as you were home by dark. No cell phones

Yeah somehow the new Schwinn classics are not the same as the old Sting Rays as I had as a kid. They look close. But a banana seat at 64...Not the same as 7-10 years of age.

Yeah I don't want to look like the Meth head scoping something to steal for the next score. Just something about adults riding a kids bike, that makes you go...hmmmm. (photo off Schwinn website) 20250209_133627.jpg

Haven't tried out the new retros, but I have a 70-something Kent banana bike with ape hangers and rear slick.

Before/after of the Schwinn, $100 Craigslist rescue

I got it and fixed it just to ride it that summer, over the winter tore it down and restored it.

I was too tall for a bike with 20" tires when I reached the 7th grade...

I'm only 5 foot 10, but depending on the frame geometry and the components it can be done.

The rule of thumb I learned when sizing a bicycle was that, when (as a male) you are standing flat on the ground, the frame's upper bar should be an inch or two below your groin.

The upper bar on the Z-Frame of my old Sting Ray was practically a foot+ below my groin by the time I was in 7th grade, and I had to have the banana seat raised all the way to even remotely ride the thing comfortably.

I soon thereafter moved to a 10-speed Schwinn World racer...

This can be true. Depends on what exactly your wants/needs are with the bike though. I do freestyle as well as just riding so I have the happy medium there, though I don't see myself riding that bike all day long as I would have in 1986 at my age either. I won't argue that if you're trying to get somewhere in a reasonable timeframe a 10 speed would have it all over my single speed BMX of course.

I remember when any and every adult would and could discipline you and your parents gave it to you again when they found out.

That was me until my mid 20s when I finally quite daily driving square body chevys. I could never install a manual choke and get it to work. always had good luck with the auto chokes though. I remember giving it a few squirts, setting the choke by hand, then starting the truck. cept any touch of the throttle would release the choke, kill the engine, and i'd be back at square one. winters sucked for that. used a big rock on the gas pedal for as "fast idle" mod for a while.
