Do not join a Search&Rescue team in Phoenix. This year a family moved out from Missouri, took a walk in July from 9AM to 3PM in desert-like South Mountain Park on their first full day here. The 10-year-old son dies from heat-exposure.

Neither the first nor the last of the year, sadly.

While I truly feel bad for the family losing their son, you gotta wonder how people can be so f ing ignorant and dumb. Even being from Missouri where there are no deserts , hiking in the desert in July is beyond dangerous. Heat stroke can come on quickly and kill within an hour or two.
A couple years ago a man, wife, toddler and their dog went for a hike in California in desert area during a heat wave. All of them were found deceased from heat stroke. Very sad. Very irresponsible, very dumb.

Yeah ... maybe once I had "so sorry, I will save you from your choices" heart-outpouring for this, but once you have exhausted 3 of 5 water containers and are not 50 ft from a water source, some sense must kick in. I lived in Ohio/Indiana for decades and knew the risks of heat exhaustion from not being able to sweat enough due to humidity and respected the line.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Went on a nice walk today. Walked in a spot that actually used to be an old highway. Then found an old deer stand. Next was more survey markers in one spot than I have ever seen in my life. Four nailed to trees as well as a plastic and a metal post put in the ground. Then finished off the walk with some beauty in the sky and a big buck rub.

Another invasive species? Or just something I've never known about?

Texas A&M did control studies a long time ago. I think they are USAs only indigenous leaf cutter. Not really invasive, just a big PITA if you’re trying to reestablish a stand of trees!
