Does anybody have any idea what I could realistically get if I tried to sell the truck and buy another one? I have wanted a first gen double cab 4wd in white my whole life, but I got other tacomas so they'd be "newer and more reliable." I guess this is God's way of getting back at me for totalling my 2nd gen

    I don't know exactly, but maybe 8-10k?

I'd look at Copart for a similar situation 3rd gen and see what they are going for. Use that as a basis for a For Sale ad, though you will have to advertise it far and be patient. I'm certain there is someone out there willing to swap in an engine themselves and own a third gen at a deal.

Sorry your shit just froze up and died. I'd love to know why, but that info will likely be hard to extract.

Insurance isn't an option? Maybe @OnePuttBlunder could offer input on that one?

Edit: Time to add (RIP) to the end of the 2018 build thread link too. Sorry? Too soon?

I hadn't considered insurance, I have USAA. I may see if it is in my policy.

Edit: I don't think USAA covers anything mechanical

You could look on LKQ for a used engine out of a totaled truck and maybe you and the gang could do the swap yourself. I did mine last year and it was just kinda time consuming, but very doable. (Was a 2nd gen 1GRFE though) is there a spare car in the family you could daily till complete?

I have the family beater right now, our 2000 Honda Civic that just hit 283,000 miles. The only problem with the gang helping swap it is that I am full time in my last semester of college, and I leave for USAF pilot training in early June. I need a reliable vehicle for the next two years that I can just drive and not have to worry about. I don't know if I have the time to swap an engine on this truck unless I pay a shop to do it quick

Not relevant to me, but what is different about the engine with the different trim package?

No idea how reputable this company is, but theres a few lowish mile local 2GR-FKS for sale on eBay from Arizona Auto and Truck Parts for around $3k as well

Anybody looking for 1 tons? Not bad deals through Ballistic Fab as they are closing and liquidating their stock....

If you can pull some long days it can be done, then sell and buy the 1st gen you want. Realistically though you are wanting a 30 year old truck and assuming you won’t have problems

Was just going to say that. Love my 1st gen, but I'd be lying to say it hadn't become a bit of a money pit.

They're just getting old. Old shit breaks, and its got to be replaced. They make it to like 300k maintenance free so people don't replace anything, then you buy it and have to replace everything

At least in my case it was my own dumbass self that was profiting by not doing any maintenance for 10 years, but god damn its been coming back to bite me now

Hoping once I've got through everything it'll be good for another 10 years, but since its mostly relegated to trail usage and hard miles I doubt it

But at least you'd have the one Tacoma thats an appreciating asset not depreciating lol

If the right first gen came along, I might get it. My thought was that I would take it to my scoutmaster and have him go over it with a fine tooth comb and replace damn near every wear item and anything that needs it. Idk, it is probably a pipe dream

I’d add design capabilities in terms of safety have come along way too and all the other cars on the road have gotten heavier... I’ll own the risk of driving occasionally as a toy, but I wouldn’t consider daily driving mine.

Yeah I wouldn't daily mine again
Had to for a week a couple weeks ago while waiting on a part for the actual daily, and that got real old real quick.
I think it'll improve once I get my new UCAs in though. Eventually going to sound deaden the cab too, maybe then it would be daily-able again.
Not that either address the safety. I'd feel safe in most accidents if the other car has good crumple zones.. But if you get T-Boned while in a 1st gen, then good night.
