Lol! I worked all week! Today was my Saturday. Anyhow, had it towed to my trustworthy repair shop. Codes were P010012, P160400, and P160500. Said they cleaned the Mass Air Flow Sensor and it got better but was still surging on start up so they are replacing it. They said the fuel readings were crazy high. They are pretty sure thats the problem...said it may have stemmed from K and N air filter I had in there. But I've had it in there for like 4 years with no issues, and I haven't oiled it in quite a while. But I'll toss it and put a normal one in there anyway. Thanks for all the suggestions and help...appreciate you guys.

i have 60k+ miles on my K&N and I clean and oil it every oil change. It's not the filters fault

That's the great thing about the oem paper filters. I change mine every six oil changes, and it could go a lot further than that.
No performance gain with K&N, and lots of room for user error..

I concur. I have 170K in my FJ Cruiser, all with an oiled K&N filter. That FJ engine has never hiccuped once and still runs like it's new. If it's the filter then the OP over oiled it.

I think you're exaggerating saying a paper filter last 60k miles (if doing 10k interval) Especially if you go anywhere offroad on dry dirt roads.

slapping a paper filter on the side of your fender and "cleaning" it isnt comparable to washing a KN and oiling.

Nope, the OEM paper filters have a lot of real estate.

I changed the last one with around 40K on it, and if I hadn't already popped the box, I wouldn't have bothered.

Environmental conditions obviously have an affect on all routine maintenance.
I do off road frequently, but it's hard pack clay, so not much in the way of dust, fortunately.

That old 4L would run like a top forever without an air filters lets be honest.

But personally my intake is one of the most protected parts on my truck and the amount of fine particulate those k&n's have been proven to allow by compared to oe ill keep running my oe behind a snorkel and pre filter.

I'm just glad K&N give you those stickers for the airbox, makes buying a used vehicle much safer since you can avoid any vehicle that's been mistreated.

I've thought the same thing many times.
What's even better is the fact that those who own them, when putting their vehicle up for sale, proudly display it in the pics, so I can make quick pass without wasting anyone's time.

I believe the truck wouldn't start or atleast would die with a bad crank sensor. Fuel pump wouldn't get a signal. Maybe op just installed a big ol cam

    Yeah.
I have the TRD version with the TRD intake, but I just run paper now. I used to swap to a paper one before heading to the hills, and only used the oiled one while in town, but it just became a hassle.

Several days on dusty Colorado roads would clog a K&N style filter in no time. If it didn't, I'd be really worried about what made it through. I take my paper filter out and knock it against a post multiple times per trip, then buy a fresh one on the trip home.

Well, at least we finally also know what engine you have too. Let us know if the MAF was in fact the issue when all is done.

Since this is a air filter thread now.. does anybody actually think "washing" the k+n actually does anything?
If the dirt particles are mixed with oil and stuck into the filter material how is running water over it going to magically get them to fall out of there?
Everytime I see a k+n on a customer's vehicle it's always a soggy mess and collapsing into the housing
