Warming up the truck still necessary?

I start the truck and wait for the for the fan clutch to stop its roaring noise, and for the air-injection pump to stop its loud whining and then reverse itself and shut down. About 30 seconds total and rolling...

 

You're basically repeating what I've been saying since the thread started in 2022. Not sure if you're agreeing with me or explaining to me..

 

I just don't shut my truck off..EVER.
Wherever i park it, i just let it run and lock the doors. This allows for the engine to be at an optimal temperature anytime i want to drive someplace.

The oil is at 0 weight when cold and additives bring it up to 20 weight at operating temp.
Keep starting your engine and loading it with the oil at 0 weight.

 

Below 0 I remote start it from the app while I get my coat and work boots on and my stuff ready to go. Gives it a few min to get everything flowing, especially when it's cold.

 

I start my truck when I get into the cab and then it takes 15 to 20 seconds to get strapped in, plug phone in, pick my nose, etc. before I head out. My neighbor has a 2014 Nissan truck that he doesn't wait one second before heading out and it's running fine so maybe no warmup is OK?

 

These aren't air cooled engines with a choke bore which require warming up, there is absolutely zero reason to let the engine run longer than it takes to get your seatbelt on and the mirrors checked, regardless of how cold it is outside.

 

I can think of some reasons without even trying. -30. If you haven't experienced it don't knock warming up until at least defroster keeps breath from fogging up inside of windshield and windows. Also snow on windshield and vehicle, heavy frost on vehicle and windshield.

Those have nothing to do with the engine.

 

Not directly, no, but try turning the steering wheel when the power steering fluid is -30°. And if you think the transmission is clunky and slow normally drive without letting the fluid warm up a bit and really see how bad it is. The engine warms up all of that.

 

True, but by driving the vehicle instead of letting it idle, both will warm up in a fraction of the time; that and I fail to see how the engine can warm up the transmission for those of us who do not have Tacoma's which use the radiator for transmission cooling.

 

The heating is conducted through the engine block/transmission mating surfaces in addition to being generated by the fluid friction just being pumped around and air warmed in the engine bay by engine heat. In cold climates we use block heaters and oil pan heaters and if you check the transmission temp after a couple hours of being plugged in it is warmed just via heat transfer through the metal.

 

Back when we were still getting the neutered M3 in the US, you would get a dummy light telling you not to go balls out in the car until the engine had warmed up sufficiently.

I like how the active shutters choke modern cars to heat them up faster when it’s cold.

The heater and defroster will only work well by blowing warm air when the engine is at operating temp.
A cold engine blows cold air from the heater and defroster.

 

Sorry, a manual transmission will bleed heat faster than any minute amount of heat which may happen to reach it from the engine bay.

 

Once again, this has nothing to do with the engine.

 

Unless you have some fancy car with an auxiliary heater, your engine coolant is feeding your heater. And if the coolant is cold, your heater is cold.

 

Not true. Been there and done that with instrumented testing, not just anecdotal experience or hearsay.
