Latch issues with Toyota brand tri-fold Tonneau Cover. It is the Tonneau section and latch closest to the tailgate. The latch connects and seems to actuate normally and grab-on to the post but has a lot of play in it (both left and right latches)- and are not tight enough to pull that section of top down and snug. The other 2 sections of the tri-fold are good and snug (different latches). The pull handle and cable move as expected but obviously something is off. -got it working normally yesterday then left the Tonneau open overnight. ...this morning the latch is again not snugging up.

    Ideas appreciated!

This is a recently purchased 2023 Tacoma TRD Sport. Still learning all the buttons!

Press harder to close it. My oem cover has two clicks on each side near the tailgate when closing it.

It's a great cover, you will be glad you got it. I just get mine about 4 inches above the latch and let her go! :)

My understanding, Toyota does not have a factory hard Tonneau cover, they just market and install the Bakflip covers. I had them put one on my 23' Tacoma and I had one on my Nissan Frontier.

There is an adjustment to the latching mechanism, both left and right sides. The mechanism moves further out or in by way of a Philips screw that you loosen to slide the mechanism. There is not much adjustment but moving it out further should tighten the hold because the latching mechanism is tapered.

    Hope this helps

Maybe that is true, but my 2019 Taco came with the cover that is the thick heavy duty one that has "Tacoma" embossed on it. I'm pretty sure that these were a port installed add-on. Is this the cover that they installed on yours? If not then we are talking apples to oranges if the OP has the same one that I do.

BIG Thank you All! If I recall correctly (can't go look right this second) this Tonneau cover is embossed with "Toyota" in the area above the tailgate.

Checking, the Toyota dealerships currently offer a number of hard folding tonneau covers options. I don't know who made the one that is embossed like you and the OP have. I will speculate that any folding hard cover in all likelihood has an adjustment for the latching mechanism. If the OP has not done so, I recommend that he open the cover and examine the latching mechanism.

pretty sure OP has this one from pre-2020
    upload_2025-2-14_14-0-5.png

Where it says tacoma or toyota or something near the tailgate.

Which locks to this pin thing on the driver side
    upload_2025-2-14_14-0-46.png

That uses the thing just out of the pic to latch
    upload_2025-2-14_14-1-14.png

I don't remember there being anything to adjust. just press down harder to click it twice.

There are some shims between the latches and the cover that offer some adjustment.

UPDATE: Big Thank you to ALL! I learned that basically letting that section slam shut under its own weight is enough to fully latch up.
Also, tonneau has ""Tacoma" embossed on it not Toyota as I first mentioned.

Now it's off to the dealer for inspection.

    Best!!

I always let it slam fairly good, with my tailgate closed. I’ve also had to disassemble the handle mechanism (about 5 screws) under the cover to lock the cable back in. That’s if it doesn’t click
