No it doesn't especially in California. Seeing the magnolia tree not being in my grandma's front yard was hard. I did like the color they painted the garage door of my old house but the cement walkway that had our handprint is gone.

Not having a support system sucks. Living out of a suitcase and no real control of what it is you’re doing but it’s fine because it’s in the name
Of service. Missing life events, missed opportunities, birthdays weddings so many things. Eventually you realize putting other things first isn’t what makes you happy. You stop and look back and realize how much time has passed. The things that at this point are probably too late to even happen. So you just accept it for what it is and make a plan. And again, wait. The sobering realization for me
Is, I had the opportunity to have everything I wanted in life. But it happened out of synch. I guess that’s my story

    Stock. SR5 Package #2.

I think revisiting places you remember from your youth is always gonna be bittersweet, if not painful.

    Story Time with Gritto

Mrs Gritto got bit, hard, by the nostalgia bug a few years ago.
I told her to maybe just cherish her memories and leave well alone.
    No, she wasn't having it.

She coerced me into going to see all the places in Johnstown she remembered.
Mind you, she still has family there, and takes presents up there every Christmas for all the little ones.
She told me it was all rather depressing, which is something she didn't expect.

She insisted on visiting Shanksville, where one of the 9/11 planes went down.
Then on to where I grew up not far away, a dairy farm in the Laurel Highlands.
I hardly recognized anything in the little town of Berlin.
    My old school... gone.

At the farm, we visited the family cemetery, dating back to 1765.
I had to drive over a recently harvested field to get there.

The mile-long, sunken back lane I was looking for was gone, all the apple trees that lined it... gone.
In the autumn, we'd take a stake bed truck along the back lane and my Dad would boost me up each tree to give it a good shake.
We'd take several loads to a cider press, then gather undamaged apples off the ground for storage in the root cellar.
The rest of them the cows got.

I looked out from the cemetery hill overlooking the farm and didn't want to see any of it any closer.

The prominent mountain ridge 10 miles or so in the distance... lined with fucking windmills.

The one thing that was as I remembered it was the cemetery itself.
There are still a few relatives in the area who kinda maintain it and keep it from getting overgrown.

I refuse absolutely to visit Perdido Beach Alabama, where my maternal grandparents had their beach house retirement home.
    I did look it up.
The beach house... gone, the bible camp next door... gone.
The house on the other side, gone.
My first crush lived there... she taught me to water ski.
    Now it's all condos.

Meh, that's how it goes, and more so the older you get.

    :sorry:
