He didn't say he needed one. If the guy wants a new truck every two years why should anyone care other than maybe his significant other. Look at it this way he is putting a nice low mileage truck into the local used truck market.

No, Toyota is not losing it. The covid shutdown nonsense demolished the supply chain (parts availability, etc...) and labor, which didn't help manufacturers meet demand. As for the growing pains (engineering redesign, changes) are normal. Testing (a vehicle) on a "controlled" environment compared to real world general public use are significantly different, imho. Our driving habit, in general, are so apart (or use of any product) that it could never be matched by corporations.

The primary problem with forums is that you get a dominance of complaints vs satisfied owners.
People want to talk about problems, not a lack of problems.
I have not had any issues with my 2024 Tacoma TRD OR iForceMax.
It is a pleasure to drive.
Although there are times I miss my old 1997 Tacoma with a TRD supercharger.

Toyota like many brands are being forced out of their comfort zones by California regulation, the EPA and standards in places like Europe.

sadly regulation drives the market and not the desires of the consumer. Don’t believe me? Look at dodge killing off the challenger and charger and no longer offering their flagship V8 which still sells like hotcakes. So here we are with growing pains, more unnecessary tech, more unnecessary electronics and safety features, all this stuff.

now someone’s going to bootlick and say these things are needed but I should be able to purchase an FJ70. I should be able to option the poverty package in a vehicle. If I don’t want power windows for example, I should have the choice. But that’s not our market. It’s a sad reality.

For the guy like me, I’ll probably just ship a 25 year old hilux from Japan and negate all the “requirements” set on newly produced automobiles.

We had economical small cars in the 80s and 90s getting 40-50 mpg. Little CRXs for example or geo metros. Small little Toyota pick ups and all sorts of options. They’re all gone now. They got better fuel economy 30 years ago than hybrids do today with less tech.

Comparing sales numbers between Tacoma and it's competition is like comparing Coca Cola sales versus Jones Soda Co

I love the CRX but I'd rather be in the tacoma during a collision.

Cars are heavier because they are drastically safer.

I agree actually, and it looks like I'm in the minority with that opinion. I've owned three Tacoma's since 2008 and personally I think the Tacoma started going downhill with the third gen. I don't really understand why anybody would buy the new 4th gen at it's price point when you can get a far more capable Colorado ZR2 for the same price as a TRDOR; hell a fully loaded TRDOR costs damn near the same as a Ranger Raptor. The only way to get 33's from the factory with a Tacoma is to spend $63k on a trailhunter or TRD Pro, both less capable than a ZR2 or a Raptor for more money.

Toyota as a vehicle are one of the best made in the world and I love mine and drove nothing but Toyotas since 1992 when I bought a Camry. 2 Corollas, Sienna and Tacoma later, last year I bought my first Mazda CX5. I don't fault Toyota products but I do fault Toyotas customer service which for me sucks. Its not so much recent because we were having problems with them over my 13 Sienna which we still have. With it we had a steering coupler issue which they denied was a problem and the Sienna also had leaking front struts at 20000 miles which was still under warranty. Neither problem was fixed and the leak they claimed was just a seep until the warranty expired and then it was a leak. The steering coupler is a on going problem with a lot of Toyota products apparently but they still wouldn't replace it.
Somehow it was noticed that I used non Toyota parts replacing a headlight bulb and I was warned that I just voided my warranty on the 04 Corolla.
My reason for going with a CX5 was because of paint issues on my 17 Tacoma which they refused to address just a few months out of warranty. Instead of a RAV4 we bought the CX5. We still have the Sienna and replaced the struts elsewhere.
I also hit a deer with the 17 Tacoma and even though I used Toyota parts when I did my mods they didn't match my trucks VIN number and I had a mess with wrong parts being shipped over and over again even though we looked up the part numbers ourselves and submitted them. They still couldn't see past the VIN number. Solution was having our local dealership photograph the VIN off a truck more like mine on the lot. My truck sat for 3 months and body shop had me keep it at home because it was in their way after it was tore down. Still love my Toyotas but......

Sounds like Tacoma ownership is more of a hobby to you. You could buy any car, and put on few miles and sell frequently, and reliability would never be a concern.

More broadly: why is it people who drive the least seem to be the most concerned about reliability?

Feel like the turbo only motor is a miss. If it weren't for that I'd consider one. Still haven't driven one though. A buddy of mine rented one for a week and hated it.

I do dig the interiors - with the exception of that massive video screen. Would prefer to ditch all that, but seems to be standard in all new vehicles o_O

Personally don't see reliability being a thing long term, but we'll see in a decade or so

Are you saying Rangers are the better, more expensive, niche market alternative to the Tacoma?

The build quality on my ‘24 is better than any of my prior Gen3’s by a wide margin. That’s a good first impression towards longevity in my book.

People frequently cite the Nissan Frontier and its DI motor here as the new standard for a long-lasting reliable small truck, yet the ‘24 Frontier has three recalls to the all-new Taco’s two. Or, if you prefer, go back to the “golden years” of Toyota quality, like the rock solid 2010 Gen2 Tacoma, which has 13 recalls. Valve springs recalled on ‘13-14’s? Sure. The 2016 launch? How I miss the good old days…

Far be it for any one of us here who actually owns a Gen4 Tacoma to contradict the hyperbolic headlines being crapped out by the same tired & depressed YouTube content geniuses, but with the new Tacoma, it would appear that statistically speaking, if we are “slipping”, we may be actually slipping in the direction of better trucks.

I'm saying you can't compare production or sales numbers between the Tacoma and anything else. They are not even comparable.
