I will never buy another GM product. A lot of people feel the same way.

Plenty of options and Toyota certainly seems to have gotten themselves in a jam when you can get both the new Land Cruiser, 4 Runner and Tacoma for roughly the same price. Particularly interesting when 2024s are selling at a discount depending on dealer/location.

Indeed. If you think either of those vehicles will be a better value long term, you've likely never owned a GM product long term.

I rented a new Silverado a couple years ago - it was a steaming pile of poo. Whatever they cost, it's too much.

My dad has owned six GM pickup trucks that I can recall in the last 30 years; a Sonoma, two Sierras, a Silverado, and two Colorados. They all were trash. Janky when new, interiors seemingly designed to punish their users, weird issues putting them in the shop often enough that the loaners started to feel like they belonged to you, and most of those issues never actually got solved; just band-aided.

That was back when we had pure gas, not this ethanol crap. New vehicles are also riddled with emissions equipment that were not required back then as well as safety equipment. How much horsepower did the CRX HF have? I believe it was in the neighborhood of 60 or so. Do you think anybody would buy a 60 hp car these days?

slap a 15,000 sticker on it as a new car and odds are someone would buy them. Especially if it was at the same power to weight ratio then.

These guys sum it up better than I can here: https://www.denverpost.com/2006/09/...he-1980s-left-in-dust-by-todays-gas-hogs/amp/

It's also important to note that cars burn a lot cleaner now, and your current Tacoma probably puts out less particulate and greenhouse gases than the Cockroach, for example. (Unburned and evaporating gas is much more harmful to the environment than the CO2 byproduct of combustion).

If any of you guys would really rather drive an old shitbox with no crumple zone and 60 hp, you wouldn't be here discussing a premium-priced, midsize truck. I think the reality of the situation speaks for itself.

Even now, you could be driving a late model Civic or Corolla and do pretty damn good for a 3-4000 lb car with modern safety features, but again, here we are.

Weight is the killer today. Under 2000 pound small cars were pretty common back then. Now, 3000-3400 pounds is the norm for a small car. We owned a twin stick Dodge [Mitsubishi] Colt in 1980. It weighed right around 1800 pounds. A Honda civic of today is right around 3000 pounds. A corolla, 3100, a Focus, 3300 pounds, an electric Chevy Bolt, 3600 pounds.

My Honda fit was 2011 and had like 112 Hp and weighed like 2400 lbs.

I would do things with that car I wouldn’t do in a heavier vehicle

Of course Toyota has taken a step back in quality, and so has Honda. Their parts are sourced from all over the world and their vehicles are built in the U.S. and Mexico. The Tundra fiasco shattered Toyota's once invincible reputation for quality, and rightly so. That said, what are better options? Tacoma is still probably your best bet for a mid-sized truck sans a Rivian.

I've had my 2018 Grand Cherokee for 6 1/2 years now without one issue. People knock Chrysler Corp (or whomever owns them this week) but I've had six Dodges one Ram and a GC with no issues on any of them other than a couple quick fix recalls. Face it. It's the luck of the draw with any vehicle. Every Chevy I've had was trash but I've found many who bought Chevy's all their lives without a hitch.
