Random DC photos. The Smithsonian has a larger air and space museum south of IAD that is crazy.

There is never just one thing that causes these things. It is always a few things that make it throw the swiss cheese. One issue is that the military operates on different frequencies so there's some debate on whether both pilots could hear the communication between all parties and the tower. (I haven't dug into it more but the do have the data to know at this point), the RJ was on the runway 1 approach and then circling to runway 33 on final, putting him in a different position than the heli pilots expected if they thought they were landing on runway 1, and that the plane they did see was the one behind the RJ doing the standard runway 1 approach. And then there's the question of altitude, as it does point to the heli being over the alt restriction there. Oh and there was an audible alert to the RJ of a collision warning 17 seconds before the crash that I don't know if they have determined if they acted upon. Lots of little factors that added up. We won't know until the final report is posted in a years time to really understand it. But the investigators are good and will be thorough.

It's one of those things in life you give up all control. Have a few drinks and buckle in, either you'll make it without drama or you'll make the evening news. Those are the only two outcomes. I'll take my chances lol

Yeah, I just want it to do the deed entirely. No half-ass "they were able to revive him, but he won't have legs or arms" bullshit. Only downside is you can't see your own news story

You forgot the questions of a single overworked ATC, and whether the heli pilots being on a training/certification flight caused folks to act differently than if they were on a more routine flight, and the fact that DC airspace is about as complicated and conflict-laden as airspace can be.

This is the big thing that most people don't get. The evening news gets the best story if they can point a finger, but it's rarely possible or useful to isolate blame or responsibility to a single party. Airspace management and flight protocols have levels upon levels of redundancy that usually require multiple compounding errors before something bad happens.

The downside is that when something slips through the cracks of a system that robust, it's almost guaranteed to be dramatic and catastrophic. The risk is immeasurably small but the consequences are as severe as can be. Hence, "the rules are written in blood".

Knowing all that, the regularity with which airplanes have appeared on the news lately still doesn't give me warm fuzzies.

Might have a double digit snowfall at the beach tomorrow.
1958, 1989 and 2010 were the last three times that's happened.

my son is flying in from Burbank CA this evening. Flight was delayed by 45 minutes due to conflicts from the winter storm. I'm about 45 minutes from the airport in normal driving conditions. I may take the backroads to avoid the long bridges where pile ups happen.

Ha I'm not actually worried. Been flying and traveling the world since 3rd grade, if it happens it happens.

 I always hated those people.

100%. My girlfriend tolerates and enjoys parts of our visits to aviation museums. I didn’t want to force her to wake up at 7am on vacation after a late night to get a full 10am-5pm day. So I got ~4 hours.

Have you been to the USAF museum in Dayton? That's a bucket list trip of mine.

admitting that Ohio is on my list of bucket trip destinations feels strange but thems the breaks

I wanna see the only XB70 left in person. I've seen a few Blackbirds up close already but not that beast.
