Brake line recall

I think one failure was reported here last July.

 

At least 2 that I have seen. First one was back over the summer and pretty sure it was posted here first.

 

Did NHTSA push for a recall, or did Toyota do it on their own? It's an interesting distinction.

Reminder for those who don't know: NHTSA tracks customer complaints about (potential) safety defects in cars in the US and makes recommendations. They lack the ability to force a manufacturer to do a recall. It's why Ford never recalled the cars with PowerShift transmissions, for instance.

 

Haven't seen any picks with the mud/debris in place. Call me skeptical.

 

Yes, there were issues reported by owners dating back to last July, described in the report in post #130 above. You have to remember, NHTSA isn't just tasked with protecting the owner of the Tacoma but also the other people on the road if a failure were to occur. People would be calling for their heads if a single injury or death happened, not to mention Toyota lawsuits if Toyota had ignored it. The report says Toyota was able to replicate the mud-caking condition. See especially pg 4-5 of that report.

 

Speaking of horns, the horns used on the LC and new 4Runner are atrocious.

I can see how mud could build up here, I just cant see how it would stay in contact with the brake line long enough to cause wear. I'd be more inclined to believe "machining debris that were not properly cleared" caused the problem.

I don't think it's a one clump issue that wears the line. But every time a chunk of something comes around and the hose knocks it off, it causes a little more wear on the hose. So after getting scrapped on from 50, 100, 150 chunks of debris it will eventually wear through. Every time I see that picture I think who could have possibly thought that was acceptable.

I don't have a 4th gen but somehow I stumbled here by curiosity from ye olde homepage. But I think I can explain a scenario where not only mud would cause a failure.

Where I am located we recently had like 8 inches of snow and then a couple days of below zero temps with like -20F to -30F windchills. The snow that got caked in my sliders, under-carriage, and wheel wells has now turned into giant icebergs. Some of them that got a little sunlight have come loose and fallen off. In one particular case that has resulted in an ice donut enveloping the slider bar that was spinning around and making hella annoying noises when I drove home until I kick stomped it into oblivion.

"What's that got to do with wheels" you say? Well, my snow/ice could have just as likely been built up inside the wheels themselves in those particular conditions. And certainly we have been through some mud that gives lumpy oatmeal a run for it's money. I'm sure some people have had wheel balance issues after playing in mud holes and had to kick the mud off before driving home. I could see a case where snow or mud gets into that area relatively soft, truck gets parked or not washed right away since you're having fun playing on the trails or on a longer expedition, it becomes hard, and then that poorly located floppy soft line grinds itself away against the new material.

Most people just drive to the mall so probably not a huge issue. Of course it could all just be imagination too. Have video games finally rotted my brain? Not sure but I saw a spontaneous ice donut today. Mmmm donuts, <insert Homer Simpson drool noise here>...

Edit: Well shucks I didn't read every post but guy in video on post 131 even says as much about stuff building up in there. I'm a parrot!

 

Maybe snow/ice, but a couple things. First it's not as abrasive as mud or worse yet, hardened mud. And second, there's a fair bit of heat generated from the brake rotor while driving and also probably tire heat transferred from driving that would transfer to the wheel and you'd think it would melt the snow/ice. Or maybe not.

 

Not melting at -20! I checked mine today and there is significant build up but still about an inch clear of the brake lines.

 

Ice like this at zero/negative degrees can be downright sharp as well as extremely abrasive.

You'd be surprised how short of a distance heat will build up from brakes at zero/negative degrees. Heat increase in the tires/wheels at those temps are also negligible (I can confirm since I can see TPMS temps of my 2nd gen sensors, they don't warm up much at all in this stuff).

I'm just in Wisconsin which might as well be Florida by comparison to our friends up north. Go ask some Canadians or Alaskans, they'll probably back me up here.

 

It also has sand and small rocks mixed in. I think the biggest risk is large chunks breaking off and catching the brake line? Daytime high today was -9 tonight -33. I cranked the heat in the garage up hopefully it melts?

What on earth - someone added u-bolt clips to the brake line.

 

I'm assuming that was a trail fix to stop the line from leaking.
