Toyo AT3 vs Falken AT4W

yeah, alot of people dont have to deal with snow and ice for 4 or 5 months.
Driving on snow and ice can be challenging.

I was in Atlanta one year when they got 2 inches of snow and they were paralyzed.

 

Has anyone tried the Toyo and AT4W in LT sizes and do you have a view on ride comfort? Falkens ride kind a hard. Not sure if it's the weight that causing that or the compound/sidewall or all the above. I can tell you the Toyos are 7 pounds lighter in 275/70/18... but also run slightly smaller. Not sure if it's worth it to switch, but looking for a more compliant ride. Yes I know E rides hard generally, really just focusing on whether Falken and Toyo ride differently in that respect.

 

I went back and forth between the KO3s and the Toyos. Went with the Toyos and really like them so far.

Falken AT4W are fantastic. Went through 2 sets of geo G003 MT’s in Pizza cutters. Done with Erated tires. Went back to 265/75/16 and loving it

 

Switched from E to SL for the Falken AT4W. I can assure you the SLs are no joke and almost as thick in the sidewall but more comfortable.

I called Falken to confirm this and they said their SL is every bit as capable and nearly as puncture resistant as the E load except that the E load has thicker tread — sidewalls are the same. They said only the Duraspec 3-ply has a significant bump in durability. This was part of my decision to switch to SL.

 

That’s exactly why I got them I knew E rated MT’s were a bit much for my use. These are perfect for me. Ride quality has improved significantly.

 

Last Summer I installed a set of Toyo Open Country AT3s in 265/70r16 and ran them for 500 miles. Going from the stock 245/75r16s on my SR, ride quality was about the same and gas mileage wasn't bad. The road noise was what did it for me. After 500 miles I took advantage of Discount Tire's generous return policy and swapped them out for a set of BFG KO2s. Unfortunately BFG only offers an E-Rated tire in 265/70r16. The KO2s were much quieter, being E-Rated the ride quality became much more firm, and my mileage went to crap. I average maybe 15 in the city and 17 on the highway if I'm lucky. I plan on running the KO2s until they wear out or become unsafe in the rain. I have no idea what I'll replace them with though.

 

Strange. I find the Falkens to be freakishly quiet but super firm in all load ranges — the opposite

 

Went from AT3W to the Toyos this winter and have been really impressed. The Toyos feel better on wet roads and snow

I never had an issue or noticed my AT3s were being loud, but my BFGs were loud when they got about 20k miles on them but this was years ago. BFGs look great but suck in the rain and never ever balance right!

 

Falkens are dead quiet

 

For a lower grade tire, they aren't bad. They are hard to balance too
