Would a windshield crack trigger the ‘maintenance required’ light in my ‘23 OR taco?

Got a decent size chip in the windshield from a rock the other day. About 30 mins later into the drive the maintenance required light starting going on, then off, and on again. By the time I got home it was steadily on, and when I read the message it just said ‘maintenance required, contact dealership.’ Plugged in my OBDII and nothing registered.

Wondering if it could be the crack or something else.

It’s just an idiot light that comes on every 5000 miles to tell you it’s time to go to the dealer. Nothing to do with the window.

This is what I thought at first also, but I was just at the dealer a couple weeks back for a toyotacare oil & tire rotate (still within first 2 years of owning) and they listed maint light reset on the list of what they did. I assumed that would reset it for the next service interval of 6 mos / 5k miles, so this threw me off

I’m sure shop class looks more like computer science now anyway. My issue isn’t being able to figure out a mechanical issue, it’s figuring out what this computer is trying to tell me or if it’s bullshit noise

I had both in middle school in the early 80s and I remember telling the CS teacher I would never use DOS and would be better in shop class. I have never used DOS and I suck at wood working.

I ignore the Maintenance Required message and reset it. I am very OCD and keep accurate maintenance records. Being OCD, I do a better job knowing when maintenance is required than my truck guessing.

    They lied.

If they had reset it, it would only have restarted the count to 5k miles. No time involved.

Thanks this is what it’s seeming like - I wasn’t sure if that light truly is ONLY for the oil reminder or could mean other things, since this is the first time it’s popped up for me

Now that this thread has been properly derailed replace that windshield with a Pilkington or OEM if you want the Toyota name on the glass.

It's not for the 'oil'. It's 5000 mile intervals and whatever might need attention.

The manual calls for 10k oil changes. If it was 'oil' only, it wouldn't pop at 5k.

When you start the vehicle and it flashes for a bit of time, it's telling you you are at 4500 miles or more, so you can make your appointment. When it goes steady, you're past the 5k.

Back to the crack in the windshield, I had one that looked like yours the first year I got my truck. I used this repair kit and can’t see the crack. Still have my factory windshield after 9 years. For under $20, I would try the repair kit first.

Alot of times if the maintenance/oil change light isn't on at the time of service it doesn't get reset, either because it's just forgotten or the one doing the oil change isn't trained to know to reset it. So it's not uncommon for people to come in with a maintenance light on shortly after service.

Typically lube techs are among the lowest paid least trained people there and they are pushed to get services done as quickly as possible so things get forgotten, overlooked, and sometimes done incorrectly.
