Gentlemen, I’m looking for advice. I’ve purchased larger tires for my truck. New tires are 34.7 inches tall and I’m contemplating on changing out my ring & pinion to a 4.88 or a 5.29 ratio. The company I want to use for the product is called Revolution Gear and there’s a gear shop here in Southern called Premier West Gears that will swap out the 8.75 inch rear end.

    https://revolutiongear.com/revoluti...oyota-8-75-2016-23-4-88-5-29-ratio-34-spline/

Has anybody swapped out the ring pinion on a new truck or have advice on which one to use?

    Thanks

    1. Have you driven the truck with the 34.7s? Do you feel you lost that much power?
    2. What are you going to do about the front? Never mind, saw it's a PreRunner
    3. You have effectively gone from a 3.6 rear to a 3.3. To get back to the original ratio you would need a 3.94. Seems like 4.88 or 5.29 is overkill.

This is not an anemic v6. The turbo 4 has a ton of low end torque. I’d roll with the stock gearing.

Snake pilot, thanks for your response. I really appreciate that.

I do not feel that the power is necessarily down. It just feels like the torque comes on about 400 RPMs later.

    not a 4 wheel drive..

I think your gear choice is a bit much. Factory gearing for an automatic is 43:12=3.583. For the manual it's 43:10=4.30. Do the math. You will be really disappointed with 4.88 when you are only adding a couple inches to the tire diameter. This are not Gen1 pickups.

    I love my revolution 5.29s.

I would reccomend you get them REM Polished by revolution and then the crew @ Filthy MOtorsports have a Cryo Finishing process that will harden the gears and make them last longer, with shorter / no break in process necessary.

That would be my only advice

This 2.4L is more than adequate at turning 35s. Especially if they’re skinny. Don’t waste your money over 400rpm

Don’t buy those gears you linked, the 2024 doesn’t have the 8.75” diff. That is a mistake by revolution.

The 2024 rear diffs are 9.5” and 8.2”. I don’t know if they are the same 9.5” from tundra and 8.2” from FJ/4R. If so, then maybe gear options exist. If not, then you’ll need someone to release gears specifically for the 2024.

The front diff itself is the same as before so at least gear options exist for that one already.

Aren't there also two different front diff sizes, one for hybrid, one for non-hybrid?

Not sure but I don’t think so. The 2024 tech info post called out hybrid for the rears it is associated to and didn’t mention anything about hybrid being different up front.

“The front differential size is 8.0"
The rear differential size is 9.5" (Hybrid and TRD M/T, same as 2022+ Tundra), the Non-Hybrid A/T and non-TRD M/T is smaller (8.2")”

I think at some point before the tech info was out, the YouTube vids got some misinformation that diffs would be different sizes than they ended up being. I think they were saying the front would be an 8.8” but that it didn’t end up happening.

I was wondering someone would start a thread on this.

Many youtubers are tossing on tires as big as 37's on these trucks claiming, "no loss power." Sorry, I call BS.

Anyone who has run significantly larger/heavier tires knows you will have to regear. Especially if you are off-roading harder than unpaved roads. It's just the nature of the beast.

What about swapping in tundra or 6MT 4th gen rear end?

This. those 4.88's and lower will cause you a bad time.

When I regeared my jeep for 35's. All the suggestions on all jeep forums were 4.88 and even 5.29 with a most people suggesting 5.29.

I ended up going with 4.56(from 3.73 stock) for the Nitto 35.12.50 Mud grapplers which measure 13.29" wide. Big heavy tires, like 80lbs total with the wheels. It was crazy. But even still, while I got my pulling power back my jeep screamed the gearing was so low. It was great off road. But daily driving it was still a pig because it was geared too low. I fragged the front diff pulling my stuck tractor out of a mud hole and went with some Rubicon take off axles with the stock 4.10 gears and it was damn near perfect.
