Hunting ?

I just moved to Texas from New York and from what I hear it's next to impossible to hunt successfully on public land down here. I hear a lot about hunting leases but I don't know anything about them or how they work. I have also noticed a lot of hunting "ranches" down here but they seem to be fenced in and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Any help/info would be appreciated, I have a feeling if I don't figure this stuff out soon then hunting season will be before I know it. Btw I'm mainly concerned with deer but I'd also like to get into hog hunting - that's something we certainly didn't have up in NY.

 

there are alot of good hog hunting places out here for you. let me get a couple of links to the places i personally have been and shot pigs out of. and alot of texas' land is fenced in because most of it is private land. but keep in mind these are not all game fences that keep animals in just regular size fences that still allow free range to animals

 

To be honest i dont know anything about public land hunting, ive always hunted on my ranch or my uncles ranch or my buddys land all for free ...

Also i dont know where you work but ask around most people hate hogs and will normally let you hunt on their land to get rid of them...

 

The only time I've hunted was in my friends back yard, we just sat in a tree waiting for a shit load of hogs to walk up and we just started unloading on them lol. I didn't have a permit for it or anything, I'm just as new to this as you.

I'm not sure, but I guess you just have to have some friends that own land to shoot or hunt.

you could also try and get on deer leases. thats what most people do

Vist the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. I mostly bird hunt and there is plenty of public land for that......the best quail hunting I've done is down in Cotulla, TX @ the Chaparral Wildlife Management area southwest of San Antonio. I would buy the Supercombo Hunting License and include the public hunting areas. They give you a map when purchased and you can visit any of the public lands for hunting. As for Deer hunting on public land you have to get selected for hunts. Its better to befriend someone who has a ranch and hunt there for free or get a lease......people post this stuff on CL all the time (someone leaves the lease and they are looking for someone else). I have friends and family that have acres of land in South Texas, but I really don't care for killing Bambi.

Thanks for the info guys, I don't really have money to spend on a lease because I'm a college student but I'll ask around and see if anyone I know from school has any property.

First off id like to welcome you to the great state of Texas!

Your best bet is to find a friend or someone you know that has alot of land and see if he will let you hunt it. Also, ive heard alot of farmers and landowners recruiting people to take care of their hogs for them.

 

Go to the TPWD website and look into draw hunts. These are lottery hunts that cost $6 each to put in for. The hunts are done in state parks and wildlife management areas. I put in for 1 specific hunt every year but have have not been drawn in the 4 years I have put in. I have a friend that puts in for pretty much every hunt he can and gets drawn for 2 or 3 a year. He got a really nice mule deer out west with his bow last year on a draw hunt.
I know it is not deer hunting but there are a ton of places to hunt waterfowl on Army corps land around a lot of lakes.

 

Hope all is well in TX, but you need to come back to NY. I got this one last year on public land in Orange County. I haven't connected yet, but have seen 5 black bear too.

 

Sean, why did you shoot that little buck? If you had waited another 3-4 years it would have been nice sized.
