Even when cold my brake pedal actuation doesn't change the engine RPMs one bit. True, when the engine is cold it idles high, but brake pedal or not, the RPMs come down at the same rate regardless.

I'm going to guess you're not watching it closely enough to notice. Next time you are sitting at a stoplight or in the driveway ice cold because you just started it, it should be idling at 1400 rpm. If it is, remove your foot from the brake and see if it drops to about 1100 rpm. That is the only time it should ever do it, if you're warmed up more than that, it doesn't really do it at all. I didn't notice it for a while but mine definitely does it all the time when it's that cold.

Pedal Commander is just a throttle dump, it shouldn't affect other aspects of your engine, especially since it's a plug in and not a tune.

I watch very closely; I park on the fourth level of our complex's garage and ride the brake while in neutral most of the way down, the RPMs start at 1,400 and are typically there until I'm near the exit gate on the first level.

So I took a longer route home from work today and my truck got more warmed up by the time I got to the light I usually notice it at. It didn't do it. I only have 10-15 minute drive to work.

It's not going to do it when warmed up and it starts to ween that behavior off once you start to move off the cold line a bit. It's most noticeable when you're idling at 1400 right after startup. Once you start to get any amount of heat into the coolant, it starts to return to pretty normal idling and no difference with the brake.

    But... Why?

Put it in gear and let it drive down. Ride the brake a little.

Save your brakes, save your fuel.

Because in 1st gear, the high-idle following a cold start makes the Tacoma move too fast for the conditions in the garage so I need to ride the brakes either way, at least in neutral the brakes aren't fighting the engine.

    Put it in 2nd.

    Still save fuel that way.

??? Seriously? Putting it in second will propel the Tacoma down through the garage at an even higher rate of speed.

I guess your garage is steeper than I'm thinking. I just know that coasting and neutral uses more fuel than coasting in gear.

I'm not sure I agree when we're talking about a cold/just started engine. To be sure you're absolutely correct when it comes to normal operations when the engine is up to operating temperature. Either way, in our garage, which is eight levels (two below grade, six above) containing 700+ parking places, riding the brakes is a necessity when the engine is cold and running at high idle. On the rare occasion when I come home, park, load or unload something, and then head back out, rolling down through the garage in first gear requires little or no braking.

    Makes enough sense.

I just know when your engine braking you're at a higher idle anyway, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's yanking the truck forward though

But that's the point, given the 10 blind 180° turns I need to make to the right between my parking spot and the exit, very slow is the order of the day, and when the engine is at high idle, the only way I would be able to go slow enough to not ride the brakes while in gear would be first gear in 4LO, which of course brings up its own issues with the drivetrain on coarse dry concrete surface.

Not with the 2Lo mod :D

But yes I understand. I did say you would still have to ride your brakes in gear though lol. All good

Sounds like a perfect situation for the 2lo mod

Or I simply keep doing what I'm doing, rolling down through the garage in neutral.

Hey does anyone know of some pedal faces that grip a little better than factory on the third gen?

I’m getting really tired of my foot constantly slipping off the clutch when my shoes are wet or dusty after a hike.
