Skip it. It's not worth the chance of having to deal with a body shop.

Only a small fraction of white tacomas have had the issue. The majority are problem free. Of course, those with paint flaking are over-represented on this thread.

If white is your preferred color I would check the VIN and if it's covered under the TSB then you'll be fine. The defective paint is only on a fraction of white Tacomas and if it does fail you'll get a free paint job on the problematic panels as long as you make the claim before the TSB expires which i believe is something like 5 years from the inception of the TSB. If you are indifferent about the color then choosing a color other then white will save you the headache of having to deal with this potential issue.

I have two 22’s and they’re both fine. Knock on wood.

I appreciate all the feedback. I'll check the VIN with the TSB. I'm kind of set on this white TRD sport access cab MT. It's reminiscent of 98 TRD AC MT that I wish I'd never sold.

In addition to the previous suggestions, how about bringing the truck to a good detailer for paint inspection?

What year is the access cab? IIRC all the manuals were made in SATX prior to the current tundra roll out. Seems to be the lions share of the impacted trucks are VINs with 3 (MX). FWIW my 2018 super white manual pro has zero signs of paint failure (knock on wood)

Thanks for the info. Its a 2017. There's no 3 in the VIN. When did Toyota change manufacturing to Mexico?

Mine is 2021 made in MX and paint is tough and has no evidence of any failure. And it spent time in the Northeast with powerwashing and salt/grime. No issues.

I thought the same thing. One day I touched the inside of my fender and 4" worth of paint came off.

That's not good... I bet Toyota warranty probably won't cover it... Claim wear and tear.
The code on mine is different, 0040 or something like that. Maybe they updated the paint for later trucks.

Toyota will cover it, it's peeling in a few small areas right now. Just going to wait til the doors show signs and then I'll get it painted.

I think newer paint is not coded 040, maybe they changed it? 0040 not IIRC.

My white 2022 is coded ( 0040/LA42 ). No issues that I have seen thus far and don’t know if my paint is an updated paint. Time will tell I suppose. Also the final assembly point says ( Baja Calif, Mexico ) if that means anything.

I had paint flaking on my rear driver door, took it in and the process only took a week or so if that. Really happy with how it came out .

Did they test/paint all the potential areas or only the rear driver door?

I don't believe so, the advisor just took pictures of the affected area and got it approved.

Mine had these paint issues, it was repainted couple years before this recall notice showed up on my door, the local dealership honored it prior to this all.

Late January I finally got the work truck in for the repaint work. Came out pretty good and it's a noticeable improvement not having peeling on the sills anymore, but the collision center still did a good job blending the paint to match the existing paint panels (props to Folsom Lake Toyota Collision). Toyota Corporate didn't cover the peeling we documented on part of the bed front, cab lower a-pillars, or hood backside though, so the collision center told me to get them photos if it progresses and gets worse. They've seen several trucks like this but only a small number compared to cases with paint damage on the doors / front fenders only, so they are trying to get as many collected as they can to try to build a case with Toyota to expand the warranty coverage.

A random bonus was that the shop also gave the truck a free set of emblem blackout overlays. I assume the black plastidip test I did on the badging was mistaken for a blackout package on the truck, and with the doors off only the really clean job I did on the tailgate badging that wasn't being repainted / wasn't peeling badly was left for them to reference.

Downside is not that the paint is cleaned up I'm remembering all the small dents the truck has accumulated over time that the poor state of the paint was hiding (I remember where/how most of them happened).

On the bigger downside, I completely forgot that repainting obviously involves removing all stickers and decals, and now will need to explain to my boss why the truck needs to go back to the decal/tint shop for new front door logos / lettering ahead of schedule.

    UPDATE
Took in to dealer this week for paint work. They are only doing doors and front fenders for recall. Going to quote me a price to do a few other areas that are chipping. Right above windshield in particular. Did get a loaner 2024 Tundra to drive , will put some pics up once it’s done. Just hoping nothing starts giving me trouble after they disassemble doors .
