I still get a good laugh out of these comments about the minivan motor. You are aware a minivan tends to haul more weight than 90% of these trucks will if they are used for general family use?
I truck with my third gen regularly. I had a second gen first and all of this bashing from second to third gen is laughable.
If your going to harp on anything in the third gen it's the transmission programming from factory it was poor. Add a tune far faaaar better. Even with a decent constant load and larger tires AND towing thrown into the mix.

Here's the thing op, only you can decide what is best for you. Go test drive and determine for yourself all you will find on here is alot of third gen bashing from people with un realistic expectations or people who have very little to no actual experience to base it off of. Every truck has its quirks just need to decide which pros and cons best suit what you want.

Personally I love my 18 still after 4 years with it. I do not hesitate to recommend one. Is it a perfect truck nope but it does everything I ask of it and starts every day.

I have almost exactly the same truck. That's relatively low milage for a 1st Gen. I'm sure there are members here on TW with over 400k miles on their 1st gen trucks. Just keep taking care of it, and it will take care of you. I'm not a big fan of the newer Tacoma's with all their fancy electronic crap that will eventually break and be costly to replace. The 1st Gens are simpler and easier to work on. My vote is keep it and get a beater car if you need one.

    That’s sweet! I’d hold on.
I loved my first and second gens and regretted selling them. I don’t feel the same way about my 3rd gen… been thinking about selling it for a while now.

Keep it, buy another car or SUV that's good on gas and drive it until you need the truck. A Rav-4 would be my choice.

I currently have two 1st gen double cabs, and a 5th gen 4Runner. The 5th gens are definitely underpowered, though they are comfy and a bit nicer to drive. Never been a fan of the newer Tacoma’s. I cant get behind how big they are and how awful the engine/transmission/gear ratio combination is. Keep the Tacoma, they only getting more valuable and harder to find

It seems like every new truck is getting larger, and having more sensors that can go wrong. Vehicles are becoming more like large computers with a motor. I think the 1st gen is a good size for everyday use. It would be hard to find another 1st gen that is well maintained and in good condition, if you ended up regretting the sale. If you could find a unicorn to buy, it's way overpriced. My vote would be to keep it if you can.

Love my first gen. Lots of parts available, mostly easy to work on. Trail truck.
What do I drive daily? An 08 Ridgeline. Has hauled everything I wanted it to, very comfortable, super reliable, not a full size truck.
    What's my point?
Well, it's what you want out of a vehicle and be realistic.
Honestly it's nice not having to rely on one vehicle to do everything.

Don’t get into a 3rd gen unless you want to spend several thousand $ to be satisfied. I’m in like 10k between gears, wheel and tire setups, tunes and other junk, and I still wanna spend more on boost lol. I’d honestly keep the 1g, those are solid trucks man. If you really want more power than what you have right now, I say get a tundra with a V8. If I did more research on 3Gs before I bought mine, I doubt I would’ve even gone to the dealer.

I had the same debate about 3 years ago. 04 Doublecab with 120k miles was 15+ years old and frame was going to need some attention. I could put $10k into it or get a new truck for $40k+. I elected to keep the first gen. I cleaned up the frame and galvanized it - don’t have to worry about it for another 15-20 years. I got the latest Magnusson S/C with custom ECU. Freshened up the King suspension. Armored it all around. Added lots of lights. No regrets. The supercharger was a game changer and put new life in the truck. I’ll drive it into the ground.

I had a 1st gen taco and sold it just last year. I bought a 1st gen Sequoia. I surely do miss the taco, but love the Sequoia slightly more. You will miss it, but you'll love the new vehicle just as much or more. No regrets here.

When I see a nice 1st gen taco I smile, but when I see a nice 1st gen Sequoia my nips get hard

I’ve had a few first GEN. When the last one got totaled, I bought a 2013. Unfortunately, the 2013 got totaled and I am back into a first Generation Tacoma, if that tells you anything

Like others have said, add a supercharger if you want more power. I miss my first gen every day. But if you're planning on having a family soon, a safer vehicle with more room would warrant selling the first gen. Otherwise, test drive newer gens and you'll probably want to keep what you have and make more memories with it.
