Purchased a used 4x4 sport with a 24k drivetrain warranty. A month later, I’m starting to hear an oscillating, whirring noise that could very well be worn drivetrain parts (u-joint, differential, etc.).

    Would this be covered?

Reading the warranty states that it does not cover normal wear and tear… ?

Warranties are kinda like health insurance these days.

Is the warranty from Toyota or a "aftermarker" insurance company?

It’s from Toyota. I bought it from Keyes Toyota in SoCal.

Not sure it’s what you’re experiencing , but the rear differentials are known to whine, I’d have them look at it, but wouldn’t sweat it. Mine does, but despite noise, they last.

I saw some videos on the whine, but mine happens at slower speeds, 10-25mph. It sounds more like a bad tire but it only happens when the transmission is engaged. When I let the truck coast in neutral, it goes away. When I put it in Drive, the noise comes back.

From your other posts, it looks like it has a 3” lift in the front; if so, I’d get it to a good off-road shop. Anything over 2” is known to cause problems.

Good call. I actually had the lift removed this weekend in case I need to take it to the dealer for a warranty claim. Hope it was a good decision.
    Sound is still there.

Truck actually rides a lot better. Alignment is great and the ride isn’t as firm now. IMG_9591.jpg

probably a u-joint, these driveshafts tend to have these issues I think. It all depends on the dealer or more specifically on the shop foreman who has to properly diagnose and make a decision whether it is normal and service advisor whether they want to put it through warranty.

Do you notice any weeping on the rear end? I had the TSB shown in post #1931 done. This TSB is for 2016 and 2017 but has pictures of what to look for if you might be having a similar issue.

No weeping, but I crawled under on my back and tugged on both front and rear drive shafts, specifically the ujoints and carriage bearing. Slight play. Is it normal to have a little play? I wonder if this is where the sound is originating from.

Check out 1:15 into this video and see if your play looks the same.

Wow! That’s exactly how mine moves. It’s definitely not solid-stiff. It has the same play. I take it it’s not normal?

Here is a good video showing a tight joint and a joint with lots of movement. Check out 1:40 to 4:00 minutes in.

Should not have any play in the u-joints period.. Play means the needle bearings are worn eating away at the cup and cross...

There is play. Hard to tell if it’s in the ujoint or in the carrier bearing or somewhere else along the drivetrain. I guess I have to have a mechanic look at it. Private or dealer.

The question is still, is play or worn ujoints or bearings covered by the Toyota drivetrain warranty? I guess I’ll find out.

Carrier bearings and U-joints are generally considered "wear and tear" parts, so they are not typically covered by warranty.

Yes they are covered for 60 months or 60,000 miles whichever comes 1st...
