HF locking socket extensions are dirt cheap, or find them on Amazon.

I hand tighten when I reinstall with new filter...makes removal a little easier since I believe both housing types expand. (What I've read here)

I sometimes have a hard time removing the housing from the filter wrench once I remove it! lol

Filter cap is the same size. I use the wrench on 2012 2zr engine, 2017 tacoma. The wrench fits 2022 rav4 spin on filter

Much appreciated! I have two of the proper wrenches, then (for the RAV4 V6 and 2012 Corolla).

just wondering if owners doing their own oil change have had trouble removing it after they put in on themselves?

    I never did
Only after dealership I did one time . But I had the filter wrench that had the slots that grab the ears.It broke one of the ears off , no leaks but I did not trust it so I replaced the housing and bought the motive x for the next change

    1. I purchased the auto zone special $8 wrench that grabs the ears. Have done 8 oil changes. I fail to see how anything beyond that is needed...

Not as much of an issue, but it was far tighter than I installed it.

I'm also still using the plastic assembly. Because I'm a stubborn asshole. Which could also further contribute to the thermal expansion problem being a dissimilar material.

Your good usually with that as long as you do your own changes . If some one else does it and makes the housing too tight then that wrench is no good

    This. Good Question.

I've done 2 oil changes since I got the truck. The first time I literally used a 24" breaker bar w/ 1/2" drive sockets on the filter wrench to get it off. (dealer over tightened for sure)
The second time the filter came off without fighting it.
I am still using the plastic filter cap, but have one plastic and a metal one on the shelf in case.
    YMMV

I'm going to agree with you. I've done all my own service since day one. And that housing is always tighter at the next change. I use a torque wrench when installing the housing so I know it's not over tight at the beginning.

Same MichaelPro oil wrench fits the 2014 RAV4 with I4 and 2022 Tacoma with V6.

Put the housing in the vise, between 2 blocks of wood to protect the threads.

I like to think I am a pretty tough and strong bastard at age 63. But I really must just be a limp wristed old man, as there is no way I can screw that filter body all the way back on by hand! I certainly get it started by hand. But I quickly reach a point where have to use the ratchet wrench and the filter cap removal tool to finish seating the filter housing back on to the motor. Once seated, I give it a light ugga-dugga and that its. But screwing that thing all the way back on by hand is pretty tough on my truck.

Do you use metal or composite filter housing?
In my experience aluminum housing goes on easier than composite.

People don't trust their own strength. I light snug with the 3/8 ratchet after spinning it on is all I have ever needed. No runs, no drips no errors.

I just did the 25K service on my Tacoma and used my torque wrench set at 18 Ft. Lbs. on the previous oil changes I just snugged it up I guess I will see how easy it is to remove next oil change.

It's the original composite housing. Don't get me wrong, it goes on and works fine. It's just too much friction to overcome by hand when reinstalling.
