It’s always been curious to me why an 8 point on the east coast is a 4x4 on the western US too.

now, I will call an elk 5x5 or 6x6 but when it comes to deer I default back to x points

Hmmm it’s hard to not go there.. like you said :smash: not only the numbers but also reporting information seems to use what I would call like “scary” verbiage all the time.. example :

“Since first reported in the United States, CWD has spread to animals in more than half of the states in the continental United States. It is always fatal in infected animals. There is no vaccine or treatment. “

To me this is worded as such to cause some confusion between half of the animals and half of the potential habit or range of these animals may live in the US. Anyways don’t think that’ll get me outta here for 30 days :anonymous:

We used to use a processor, they had game wardens there opening day of muzzle loader and rifle season and would take samples from every deer brought.

We would get the results back, usually after deer season and we'd already ate some of the meat. Never had any problems.

Maybe it's just a scare tactic to try and get us to buy meat from the store

I've never really thought about it until today.

Deer scents, urine etc illegal for hunting in SC unless collected from harvested deer here because of trying to prevent CWD. DNR reports states all around us have it but none yet reported here as far as I have heard. We also have pure strain Virginia whitetail, any restocking occurred from stocks within state. Others around us brought in Midwest strain at times. No big deal but does mean apples to oranges on sizes sometimes. We have no shortage of deer here.

The county we live in in Virginia, we can't bait or use scents at all.

We live 3 miles from the N.C. line, they can bait and use scents. The surrounding counties around us in Va. can bait until hunting season comes in then they can't.

Kinda weird we can't do any of it but I play by the rules.

im sure there are hunting examples but a good one this reminds me of:

on the Columbia River (bordering OR and WA though most of the state) there are certain rules that the states aren’t consistent on in the same fishery. Say I hook and net a native fish that I am not allowed to retain, as a WA licensee I cannot (or at least not supposed to) remove the fish from the water whatsoever, either to remove a hook or whatever (by law subject to fines etc) prior to releasing, now my brother, an Oregon resident can remove, and take photos prior to release, we often fish in the same boat…….. o_O

Well yeah but not trying to lose my spinners or plastic baits n such :notsure: it’s not so much unhooking the fish, (barbless hooks they make us use) just silly,

also IMO kinda wild expectations: it’s hard sometimes to spot the lack of fin on a fish.. that and/or determine the species of a salmon still in water fighting for its life, with the excitement of trying to land it, and then keep your net in the water while you double check.. lol it’s a hard habit to break not just netting something and bringing it in the boat.. that’s why just go with my bro and then everything is an Oregon fish, no problem

No we play by the rules but my dad is the worst lol if he has the net it’s coming aboard

I’m extremely blessed and fortunate, not everyone gets a dad like mine, spot on. In his defense too the rules on a lot of this hunting and fishing have really ramped up in recent years.. we’ve never gotten in any trouble but a few fish have been on the boat that technically weren’t supposed to be :anonymous:

The solution is very simple. Your boat must always travel down the middle of the river. If heading toward the mouth of the river your brother must sit on the port/left hand side of the boat. If traveling upstream he must sit on the starboard/right hand side. Your father gets to fish off the back of the boat and will determine at his discretion whether the fish is an Oregonian or a Washingtonian fish. If it’s small it must always be considered an Oregonian fish so that your brother can remove it from the hook properly. Consequently if you catch a non desirable fish on the Washington side of the boat, the boat must make a complete 180 and your brother will be tasked with removing the fish. I’m sure there is fine print somewhere…:anonymous:

    hahaha I love it

Although I see some silly differences I shouldn’t complain too much as the our coastal neighbors in California can’t even fish em.. sad, hopefully they see the numbers they need down there to get retention back, honestly part of the reason I’m trying to get my kiddos involved as soon as possible..
