Hey all. First time posting here, but I have culled lots of good info from you guys for years.

I just got told by my local dealership that I needed $8700 worth of transmission work for my Tacoma that's probably not worth much more than that.

I have a 2013 4x4 V6 crew cab with a decent fiberglass canopy. It has 215k miles on it. The dealer says everything else is in good shape.

So I am planning to try to sell it to some mechanically minded guy who doesn't mind putting the labor in.

Any suggestions, no matter how "ballpark", on how much I should ask for it? I want to be fair to whoever is interested, but I don't want to give it away, you know?

I can't seem to find any comparable trucks, with a bad transmission, to base my price on.

    Any help?

Hi, having bought fixer upper’s and having fixed them it is worth a few thousand IF everything else works and can be shown.

Why? If the seller is selling it broken then they are unwilling to spend the money to fix it themselves why would I take the risk unless it’s something truly special.

As the buyer of a broken vehicle I take the risk to fix the stated problem, fix the 3 things unstated (since I’m dropping $$$ anyway) and I now have to deal with the shop, my time and tools and headaches.

My recommendation is fix it and keep it (or sell it fixed) or sell it cheap and as-is.

Non working vehicle low value = salvage value.

Non working vehicle high value = salvage + $2K.

Why would I give a shit what the dealership that stripped my belly pan screws has to fart out of their mouth hiring the stupidest people they can find

    you say you’re not mechanical
    Neither was I
    Then I became a mechanic

either you’re born wealthy and don’t figure it out. If that’s the case good for you the other 99% of us are jealous.
Or you’re not and have to figure it out

What’s $8700 worth? Is that a new trans and torque converter?

historically when I decide to put a trans in a vehicle I go mingle with my local junkyard, leave with one for a max of $400, shove it in on the floor and move on

    Go to a transmission shop

Main Street transmission in Manchester used to be good if you are in that area

Find a transmission from a junkyard Tacoma. Pay a shop to swap it. No way there's $8700 with parts and labor.

S&S Transmission in Naugatuck is good if you’re near there.

Get another estimate. An independent transmission shop can rebuild it for around $3000. Replace it with one from a scrapyard for less.

Doesn't sound like transmission to me.

    Get a second opinion.

Have you tried putting it in 4x4 and seeing if the shudder goes away? If so, it’s not your transmission.

$8700 is the dealer telling you they don't want the job.
