I know this subject has been beat to death but it still has me confused. The Toyota place in Charlotte is telling me that since my truck hit 120k that I need to replace the brake assist pump and that it's 1250 bucks. I went on tacoma world and did a search and came to the conclusion that my off road model did not have the pump but it was an electrical system. My Toyota site swears it needs to be done and that I have the pump that needs to be replaced at 120k. I have watched various videos on the subject and I do not see where I even have the part. Also, if I do have this pump is the only time it's used is in crawl mode which I have never used? If you have a picture showing exactly where it is sure would be appreciated. Thanks for any help.

It does not have to be replaced unless there is an issue and the diagnosis leads to a bad booster. I assume your truck does not have the vacuum booster?

    Here's the system description:

Ask your dealer to put in writing that it’s a wear item and needs to be replaced on a schedule.

It does have a pump. It's an electro-hydraulic brake boost system among other things. The hydraulic pressure needed is generated by an electric motor driving a pump. If you pay attention you can hear it run to charge the accumulator after every few brake presses.

I don't know what the dealership is feeding you but NOBODY changes any part of this system as routine maintenance. It's only changed if something fails and even that is so rare I can't think of a case I've even heard of on this site. Something here doesn't sound right.

The dealership is telling him to change the vacuum pump, which is in some of the owner’s manuals and I believe it is in the 120K section of the manuals it’s in. But of course, as an OR owner, he doesn’t have the vacuum pump, so it’s nil.

ah okay, so I am clear (and I hope this helps OP)- so it sounds like the dealer is assuming the OP has the vacuum booster and it did at one time have a service interval? Of course, since the OP has an OR with Crawl Control, etc , he/she doesn't have the vacuum assist, so there is no service interval?
Again, I am not challenging you, really asking. I appreciate the clarification.

Ah, I did find the vacuum pump for vacuum boost systems. It says maintenance every 124k miles. That maintenance is also "disassemble and check" and not just replace.

Yeah, the dealer is essentially telling him to service something he doesn’t have. Could be shady, could just be they’re uninformed about the different trim levels and what has what.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Unless I am having trouble I am not worrying about it. I appreciate the help on this. I may call the service department and ask for exactly the part number they think needs to be replaced. Again, thanks for the help.

Even if he had one, the dealer would have messed up a perfectly good part by disassembling it and then saying he needed a new one.

    If it works…
