Question: Im upgrading to 285/75/16 tires which will be on aftermarket wheels (Pro Comp 7089). Im going to also put 285/75/16 on the stock 16" wheel spare the Tacoma came with. In the event I have to use my spare tire, am I going to have performance issues using a stock spare wheel along side aftermarket wheels regardless if Im running 285/75/16's on all the wheels including the spare?

    Hope I didn't confuse anyone...lol :p

As long as the diameter of the tire is the same, it doesn’t matter which wheel you use.

I have the stock 265/70/16 but I'm planning to upsize slightly to 265/75/16. would you guys say I'd be safe leaving the spare with the stock size?

Also, how does the spare tire area look? I'm thinking about buying a matching trd pro wheel to match. I'm unsure whether it'd get all scratched up from being in the spare tire mounting location. Thanks, and sorry for being a newbie!

I think it all depends on what your larger size is. I've always tried to match the tire size, didn't put much into brand or model, or tread pattern. Just wanted the spare to be close.

Not enough difference between 265/70/16 and 265/75/16 to worry about MOST OF THE TIME. The 75's are about 1" taller than the 70's when both tires are new. But a 265/75/16 with 30,000 miles on it will be about the same size, maybe smaller than a new 265/70/16. Tires get roughly one size smaller as they wear out. If I were going to 285/75's or larger I'd want a bigger spare. It's nice if it's the same size but one size down is probably close enough for most people.

Tires, even the spare, need to be less than 10 years old to be safe. Every time I buy a new set of tires, I rotate one of the take-off's to the spare location. When I upsized to 275/75's I had a 265/70 spare for a while, but with the next tire purchase I put a 275/75 in the spare location. It's still not exactly the same size since it's an old tire vs 4 new ones on the ground. But close enough for what I do.

If your truck is 4X4 then all 4 tires on the ground need to be the EXACT same tire with pretty much the same tread depth on them. You need to buy 4 tires at a time to keep them the same diameter. On a 2wd truck it's OK to replace 2 at a time as long as they are both on the same axle.

If you're running a spare of a different diameter, it's best to not use it in 4X4. You effectively end up with a different axle ratio on the corner with the odd size tire. For guys who are into hard core off roading then having a 5th tire exactly the same is a good idea. And they should do a 5 way rotation to keep them the same diameter.

I also STRONGLY advise an air compressor, plugs, and tools to repair a small hole. I've lost count of how many tires I've repaired without having to resort to using the spare. In the last 30 years I've only had to put the spare on once because the hole was too big to plug. I've made temporary repairs that got me to the next exit and a tire store where they could put the spare on. It's a lot faster, safer, cleaner and easier to fix it than resort to the spare. Often I can just air up a flat and it will hold air long enough to get to a shop to be repaired correctly. Or replaced if necessary.

What if it's a 0 offset vs the stock +25.. ? actually not sure what offset a spare is on. Probably the same as OEM wheels.

It doesn't matter, the hoist for the spare will suck up any differences in offset. You can even flip the spare and mount it face up or face down. I run a full size spare (255/85R16) on a matching TRD faux beadlock wheel mounted face up in the factory location. It's tight, but it fits.

I run 285/70/17s on the truck but have a 255/85/16 as the spare mounted in the stock location. It just fits between the Hammer hangers and being the same outer diameter but also thinner width which makes for a little bit more clearance underneath.

Did it fit as os, or did you have to bend the hangers?

Nope fits totally fine, even fully inflated. I had heard of the deflation trick if the tire didn’t fit but mine fits up there just fine.
