So my old (14?) rescue barn cat claws no longer shed. If I don't cut them, they curve around into her toe pads. It is nearly impossible to catch her, hold her down and trim them without suffering significant physical damage. Any insights?

Your damage or hers? You could take her to a DVM. We prefer large animal veterinarians. Dad took Pippa to see Doc Brophy for her annual check, and while Doc attempted to give her a pill, she stuck him with claws. Step 2, called the assistant in to hold down the cat, and she bit him! Success at last, though. Doc said as they were finishing up, "There is an injection for that." <G>

Soooo.... We took our cat the the Vet to have his teeth cleaned and claws trimmed. He is/was a feral cat that we adopted as a very young kitten and is not 12yo. The vet knocked him out and took care of his teeth and nails with no issue. When we got him home he hid under the bed for 3 days and hissed at us before we finally coaxed him out with food. He still hid under the bed for another 3 days but came out to feed. It took over a week before he was somewhat back to normal. We decided that he was better off not getting those procedures done as the stress level for an older cat wasn't worth it.

That's exactly where I'm at. Getting her in the carrier is a feat, and if I can, she shits herself once I can get her in it. She has been to the vet once in her life. I guess I'll just put on a long sleeve shirt and take the punishment.

Just find a cardboard box that just fits inside the carrier and problem solved.

Years back wife and I were in the front lobby at our vet. We see this guy coming toward the front door pushing a shop vac. We kinda just looked at each other a bit puzzled but didn’t say anything to each other. As you can imagine the guy goes up to the front desk and pulls his cat out of the shop vac. Obviously no cat carrier?

My shop cat is 16 and has the same problem. Only way to do it is have 2 people, have one grab it by the back of the neck and hold it while the other trims. Grab the neck with one hand and hold the body with the other. When I say grab the neck, grab a hand full of neck at the top behind the head, not like a choke hold.

Does something to them (like a dominance thing) and they won't move but you can't let go of the good grip on the neck until completely done.

Luckily my wife worked at a vet years ago and showed me that, I'm always the one holding.

I realize it’s late now but when they are kittens we constantly played with their feet to get them used to the nail trimming ordeal. Still a process and sometimes we don’t get all of them, take the wins when you can and don’t make it a bad thing keep it positive as much as possible.

My 16lbs male cat " Gunny" found out he barely fits inside the carpeted tubes on his new Cat tree

My wife started brushing the cats teeth and trimming nails right when we got them as kittens.
I'm blown away. The come running when they see the toothbrush and never complain or fight back when getting nails trimmed. I tell her she is the "Cat Whisperer". I've never seen anything like it.
