So this weeks starts a mandatory "be in the office for 8 hours a day, 3 days a week" thing.

Up until now we were on a "flex" schedule. Come in 3 days a week, get here a little late if you have to and leave a little early if you have to because of kids getting on and off the bus. It was working perfectly because all of us would start working earlier while still home, do what needed to be done to get ahead, come in and then go home and keep working until the 8 hour work day was done. And in a lot of cases (just about every single one of us) was even working after 5 and not getting paid because we're not allowed to have OT, but we all did it because we took it as a give and take being able to work from home. Even before we had to start coming in 3 days a week with the flex schedule.

Worked out great for me because I have 2 kids in elementary school, and they are not allowed to get on and off the bus without an adult being present.

This new "policy" is not because we weren't getting our job done, because we asked if that was the reason. The reason we were told is because the person that is in charge of the department misses the "comradery" that we used to have when we were in the office before Covid. It is not company wide as far as I am aware, it is only our department. Not sure if other departments have people that come in anyway but it's not a company wide thing as far as I'm aware. What really pisses me off is that the person that come up with this idea sits in her office all day, barely speaks to anyone, and only comes out when she goes out to smoke, which is a lot. Along with the "second in command" of the department who doesn't sit in an office, but walks by and doesn't say a word to anyone. Not even a simple "hi".

I guess I'm not in a position to complain very much, for now, because my in-laws are around since they are retired and split time between here and FL in the winter (up until now), go to Portugal for the Summer, and my wife is a teacher so she is able to SOMETIMES get home before the bus gets home for our kids around 4 o'clock. And my parents are also retired now and are still around for now. But when my parents move back to Portugal full time at the end of May and my in laws aren't around, my wife isn't always able to get home in time. She stays after school late all the time because of meetings, cleaning up the classroom because she teaches kindergarten, and prepping for the next day.

My wife won't "let" me find something else because then I'll lose all of the vacation time I have for having been here so long, and because she thinks that her parents are able to help and she thinks she can get home in time on days her parents aren't able to help... which I really doubt. But one of these days something is going to happen and things won't work out so well.

I guess I just have to ride it out, hope for the best, and when shit hits the fan then I'll pull out the "I told you so" card and find something else. I'm the type of person that family comes first and you do what you have to do for them. Especially if they are your kids.

You and I are in opposite positions. My wife sees me, sees the stress I am in, and what it is doing to me. She says she doesn't care about money, or pto, or any of that, and to leave my worthless boss and the crap culture he creates as soon as possible. I am trying to hang on at least a couple more months to avoid paying back the hiring bonus I got least year, but I am wearing super thin. Already have my resume out to some family to help me sharpen it up. As much as I want to stuck around until that July date I have been aiming toward, I don't want to miss the right opportunity, if it comes along before the .

 

Every day she asks me how work was, and I always give her the same answer.... it sucked.

I've told her a bunch of times how it don't like it, how it stresses me out, and how I want to find something different but I think she either thinks I'm joking, or she just doesn't care.

ARGH

 

You know… PTO is negotiable when you are offered a new job.

 

I know... but where I'm at now (4 weeks vacation and 5 sick days), I doubt any place would give me that much right off the bat.

 

Dont companies have to pay out your PTO?
