Hi all. I’m taking my truck in in about a week to my local trustworthy mechanic to look at and drive to diagnose a growling/humming noise in the front end, seems like drivers side.

In anticipation of a diagnosis of wheel bearings and/or needle bearing and maybe a cost I don’t wish to pay, I’m lining up the tools and parts to do both wheels and ECGS bushing all at once while it’s apart.

Hoping someone would be willing to let me borrow their ECGS tool to remove the needle bearing so I don’t need to buy it new.

Please PM me if you are willing to help. I’m in Maine and we could talk about whether it’s better to meet or mail.

    Thanks in advance. Jim

Needle bearing can be diagnosed pretty easy, does the noise stop when you put it in 4wd?

I’ll need to let you know next week, as we are currently away from home for the weekend but thanks for the suggestion. Will try and see.

Took it out this morning to see if it still made noise in 4WD and it does. Are you saying that this indicates the needle bearing is not a problem?

Same issue here on an '11 single cab 4wd at 108k miles
Noisy hum do not go away in 4wd
In fact it really only goes away at speeds greater than 70/75 mph
Lots of play up and down on the driver side CV axle, it's not tight no movement like the passenger side is

Anybody else have had this issue? Point me in the proper direction!?
Shop time to replace the needle bearing is about 5 hours I was told at the DiY shop

This type of maintenance is all new to I :)
What is the difficulty level to DiY this rascal and get the humming to cease LoL

Well I assume you’ve already fixed your issue, but the answer is yes

Wheel bearing? What have you done to diagnose the issue so far?

    Perhaps just CV axle?
I turned the wheel and heard no real noticable bearing noise

I drove it in 4wd at 60 mph and the humming was still there!

Had it on the DiY garage lift today to change the oil filter and front diff gear oil
Spun the wheel, no real chatter
Rocked the wheel 12 to 6 and no play either
Put hand on the CV axle and definitely moved up and down inside the diff... Passenger side did not move at all

Tires are falken wild peaks at about 6/32 tread and 53k miles approximately

This '11 taco used to be such a quiet whisper on the freeway :(
